956.0. "Disaster Recovery/No. California Quake" by SCARY::M_DAVIS (Marge Davis Hallyburton) Tue Oct 17 1989 23:49

This topic is dedicated to discussions of Digital and the northern
California earthquake, estimated at 7 on the Richter scale. The
epicenter was between Santa Cruz and San Jose.

I'd like to direct the conversation to two topics: Digital facilities,
and Digital customers. Also, if there are Digital-sanctioned
charitable efforts to aid the victims, please use the topic to
    publicize such efforts.

    regards,
    Marge

I just checked and the NET is down at all of the silicon valley
facilitys. My guess is that the power is out from what I've seen
    on TV.

You are partially mistaken.

Node WRO8A, in the WRO facility (Santa Clara) appears to be fine.

Power is out in the Palo Alto area, but there is not significant structural
damage in that area.

I don't think the Santa Clara was is the damaged area...but THEBAY
(home of the San_Francisco note) is currently down.

6.9 is a much better number than the 8.0+ that seismologists have
predicted to occur within the next 30 years.

I won't attempt to list all the Digital facilities in the area
that is affected by this disaster. I hope that we will receive
timely communications (e.g., through LiveWire) about the safety
of our people out there, as well as our customers. While the
loss of equipment would be unfortunate, it should be the least
        of our worries.

While I endorse Marge's request for information about charitable
efforts in the wake of the disaster, please be careful about how
such information is stated. Please limit notes to describing the
opportunities to help, but please DO NOT SOLICIT help or specific
actions. Any notes that are a solicitation must be removed from
this conference by the moderators. It's lots easier for us if we
        don't have to do that.

956.5The situation is serious, but order is being rapidly restoredCOVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertWed Oct 18 1989 12:406
Several systems in our Palo Alto facility are back up and running.

For example, although not accessible by DECnet yet, DECWRL is up and running
and accessible by TCP/IP.

Having just moved out of Santa Clara, I have many ties there.
The word is that the facilities in Santa Clara are just fine, as
are all of our employees. The systems there were all (or mostly)
down last night, but seem to be coming back up today. I suspect that priority
was given to area routers such as WRO8A, which is why that one came up early.

I have been in contact with our West Coast operations in Cupertino and
Mountain View. Of paramount importance, I have learned that all our
employees are safe. Our buildings sustained minor damage such as broken
ceiling tiles, broken glass, etc. As is normal procedure, the buildings
will be reinspected to ensure structural and environmental safety
before opening for operations. We expect to be back in operation very
    quickly.

AT&T has requested that you please delay making calls to the West Coast
until normal communications can be restored.

Word from our contacts in the downtown San Francisco office (home of THEBAY::)
indicate only minor damage and no personal injuries (at least that we've
heard of). However, the San Francisco office is expected to be closed for
the rest of the week.

I don't know whether Bob gave permission for his message to be posted in this
conference. Although it appears in VTX, the following sentence does not appear
there:

> AT&T has requested that you please delay making calls to the West Coast
> until normal communications can be restored.

This is an interesting topic. As I told Bob by mail, a local AT&T spokesperson
was on WEEI Wednesday morning saying that there should be no problem calling,
though you might get busy signals. And except for the Marina District, all
calls I put through to the Bay Area went through on AT&T with at most four
tries. And ITT (10ITT) was able to put all calls through with only one try.

Even if Bob's report had been correct, why should you listen to an AT&T
spokesperson? If GM said "Don't buy cars this week" should you put off
your purchase of a Ford?

AT&T is not the only long distance company. There are other companies in the
market. Probably for this reason the local AT&T spokesperson said "call if you
want to, and we'll try to get your call through."

The past replies pretty well sum it up. The San Francisco office
will be closed until power is provided. They won't turn on power
until all buildings in the finance district are checked for gas
leaks. All customer operations are being run out of our Alameda
    (Oakland) office.

The Santa Clara offices are just fine, and we are getting ramped
up to support our customers. My group Area Support is being told
to expect to work the weekend. They are flying in 24 CE's to the
    bay area to help out.

So far as of 11:00 pst the calls are light. My brother at his place
of work said that all his DEC systems came out okay but the SUN
systems fell flat on their faces....

Will try to keep this note updated.
