882.0. "Looking for Career Days information" by BURREN::UNLSTD_PARTS () Thu Aug 03 1989 11:13

Does anyone know if there is an agenda and/or a list of available
positions in conjunction with the upcoming Career Days being held
in Marlboro? It looks as though there are alot of opportunities
out in the field where as I am interested in what is available in
southern NH as I live up here.

If you are in TMP check with your HRM as there have been a few mesages
on that subject. My HRM forwards all this info to us so we can keep
abreast of the situation - sorry to say I have been just reading and
not saving it otherwise I would forward it to you.

I drove down to MRO3 for a meeting & was AMAZED to see all the cars
there. I heard that the planners estimated 1500 poeple might show
up over 3 days, and that 1800 showed up day 1, and 1500 day 2.
It looks like people really are interested in seeing what is avail
in the field & are interested in helping our resource allocation
problems get resolved. I heard from some folks that positions were
filled, jobs accepted virtually on the spot. This sounds like a
great way to break thru the admin barriers to getting people in
    jobs they want or need.

It's also a way to show upper management that personnel and the
sales organizations have tried everything to hire people into
Ultrix and Windows. Out of this they can request to hire from
	outside to fill critical positions.

    IMHO
I agree that the Job Fair was a success, but I hardly think that personnel
and/or the sales organization have tried "EVERYTHING" to hire people,
especially when there are people here (CXO) and elsewhere that don't
have the opportunity to visit a Job Fair back east. I personnaly would
like to see more emphasis on retraining manufacturing people in plants
outside of New England before we start hiring from the outside.

I too thought the "Job Fair" was excellent.

Still, I found it interesting that while the company is going to
great lengths to get people "closer to the customer" and out to
all of the sales offices, (and out of New England), the table with
the longest lines was the Northeast Area table.

The company desperately needs sales and sales support everywhere
_except_ New England. Yet, I could walk up to just about any table
without waiting in line, except for the Northeast Area table, which
always had a long, long line at it.

You can't blame people for not wanting to leave family, friends, etc.

My UM told me recently that corporate is finally opening up some relo
funds to try and get people out to field. Due to a lack of relo funds
on my project, we have had to hire outside contractors for positions
that internal people had expressed an interest in, but couldn't move
    themselves 1200 miles to take.

I was one of the people who interviewed at the career fair in Marlboro. I
had several interviews on the spot for various areas in the country, and I
was immediately invited out to both Southern and Northern California for
on-site interviews. I had four interviews over a nine day period, which
quickly led to a job offer in Irvine, CA (southern). The career fair
certainly was a good way to help me find the perfect job in an area which
I've always wanted to live, so I must say I am extremely impressed with
what the field has done to move people out of internal support and into the
field.

Now, with that said, I must point out one extremely frustrating part of the
career fair process. Relocation through the fair has been the most
confusing thing I have ever experienced at DEC. The way I understand it,
California is responsible for part of the relocation, and Marlboro is also
responsible for a part of it. I am scheduled to start working out there in
less than two weeks, and I have yet to have a person from either area call
me and identify themselves as a contact person to help me through
relocation.

I have spent days and days on the phone trying to figure out who is
supposed to be helping me, and only in the last day or two have I made any
resolutions. I'm told that part of the reason for these hassles is that I
am one of the first people to actually be in the process of moving to this
area through the career fair, and I hope that's true, because if anyone
else has to go through what I've gone through in the last few weeks, my
heart goes out for you.

Well, with that said, I must say I'm extremely excited about my new job and
new location, and I feel confident that the relocation issues will
eventually work themselves out. Thanks to DEC for coming up with a great
program to help out both the company and their employees at the same time.
I am really impressed!

Digital - 'Career Opportunity Days II' Jan. 9, 10, 11
In an ongoing effort to better meet our business needs in a highly
competitive industry, "Digital - The Next Decade" continues to focus on
specific career opportunities in the U.S. Field. To help meet those needs,
"Career Opportunity Days II" will be held Jan. 9, 10, and 11 in MRO3. The
event seeks to fill hundreds of critical Sales, Software Sales support, and
direct revenue support positions outside the greater Boston area. "In order
for Digital to be successful, it is very clear that we have to deploy more
resources to direct and indirect revenue positions in the field," says Tom
Colatosti, Organization and Workforce Development manager. "Increasingly, work
needs to be more directly linked to customer needs. Every employee needs to
consider his or her career objectives in today's changing business
environment. Employees need to recognize that work is changing and moving
closer to the customer. Digital is committed to continue to invest in its
employees to ensure they have the necessary skills and are adequately prepared
for this new work," Tom continues. "The 'Career Opportunity Days' process is
not just for employees who have already seen their jobs change, but is
appropriate for every employee," adds Jim Waldron, Career Opportunity Days
program manager. As a result of "Career Opportunity Days I," approximately 300
employees responded to the challenge and embarked on new careers in the Field.
"Career Opportunity Days II" seeks to build on this success. It will differ
from the first event in several respects:
o Currently, the Field is seeking to fill 1,000 newly-created positions.
These positions did not exist during "Career Opportunity Days I."
o Positions now include other Field opportunities in addition to
     Sales and Software Sales Support.
o Pre-registration and pre-scheduled interviews are an important part of
the event to ensure that candidates are appropriately and efficiently
     matched with hiring managers.

To register for "Career Opportunity Days II," every interested employee
should submit his or her resume electronically between now and Dec. 5. (See
mailing instructions below.) All resumes received will be acknowledged.
Resumes will be reviewed and forwarded to appropriate hiring managers, who
will select candidates for interviews. Interviews will be confirmed during the
week of Dec. 18. The interviews will be conducted during "Career Opportunity
 Days II," Jan. 9-11.
Most positions are available in most U.S. locations.
Sales Reps are needed in all major industries, all U.S. locations and all
major applications. Opportunities are available in Government Sales,
Volume/OEM Sales, Large Account Team Sales, etc.
Customer Support: Proposal/quote generation; program management; project
 management; sales administration; etc.
Sales Support: Applications (e.g., Finance, Engineering, Office Systems,
Imaging, etc.), Technologies (e.g., High End Systems, UNIX, Data Base, OLTP,
 etc.)
   Software Consultants
   Customer Training
   Customer Support Centers
   Customer Services
