SOFTWARE PRIN ENGINEER
HARDWARE PRIN ENGINEER
QUALITY PRIN ENGINEER
MFG PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
(BTW, this seems to eliminate the requirement for mixed-case typing.)
(It also takes most of the worry out of the "principal/principle"
faux pas.)
(I guess manufacturing engineers knew how to spell "principal", but not
"manufacturing".)
(Do these look backward to anyone else? "What do you engineer?"
"Hardware princip[le]s!"

Forgive me for seeming naive, but..promotions were, in my
mind, based on your current position, and any additional
skills/responsibilities that you needed to gain to advance
to the next level. Those should be defined between you and
your mangler during your PA. Once you jumped those hurdles,
the "needs of the business" was the operative phrase to
determine the timing of a promotion. Of course, this does
not take into account any office politics that might be
played in your particular scenario...

Looks like you misunderstood me. What I am trying to ask is do one
have to go through any interview cycle for the promotion?? If yes,
is this procedure describe any where(for ex. in Personnel Policy).

867.9 | Here's the process.. | SIVA::ELMER | | Thu Jul 20 1989 10:29 | 19 |
| There is a process for promotion to Consulting engineer. There
are a list of requirements such as "technical leadership", "10 years
engineering experience", and most important, "evidence of a direct
and substantial recent personal contribution to a successful product",
and, "2 letter of recommendation from existing C.E.'s".
Process
-------
1. manager of candidate writes a promotion proposal
2. promotion proposals are considered by a Corporate-level
promotion Review Board. It consists of sr eng mgrs and Corp
Consultants
This is just a brief overview of the important elements of the
consultant review process. See your Personnel Consultant for the
details.

| .1 had the real poop. For a detailed description of the promotion
process to engineering consultant or senior consultant, type
$ VTX CEPB
If you can't get it that way, ask Mary Barry (RDVAX::BARRY) or
Joan Albertelli (RDVAX::ALBIE) to send you a copy.
For principal engineer, it's the same as the lower engineering
classifications - it's between you and you boss, and is based on
demonstrating that you can do the job (which usually means consistently
exceeding the requirements for the previous level).

Unlike the Engineering equivalents Eng Cons & Senior Eng Con (levels AE & AF)
both SWS Cons I & II are promotible positions requiring not promotion review
board. In short promotion from Cons I to Cons II is at your managements
disgression given you meet the requirements as specified (See descriptions
for 52AE & AF).

Correct ... it's when you go from a Consultant II to a Consultant
III that there is a formal process which must be followed, and a
review board.

| To my knowledge, nothing much has changed as regards process for
promotion, based on JEC. The "expected interval" may have changed,
however, since the salary ranges are much broader, with more overlap.
Folks who were on the "fast track" jumping from plateau to plateau may
find themselves staying longer in a given plateau.

| Re: .12, .13, .14
Whereas there's a formal process to be promoted to C3, the
districts may have procedures in place for promotion to C1 and C2.
In the Connecticut District we have such a procedure. This
procedure has been in place for over a year for C1 promotions and
a few months for C2 promotions (we have only 3 C2's in the district).
In the Connecticut district, in order to be promoted to C1 or C2,
you must do a write up that contains eight sections which look at
your career at DEC in several different ways. The write up includes
a current resume and must have at least 2 letters of recommendation
from unit managers or Consultants at the level you are being promoted
to or higher. The write up is presented to the management team to
the district manager and the other unit managers, who must agree that
this is a good candidate for the position.
I know since this procedure was first used for C2 promotions on
my own promotion to C2 this year.

We follow about the same process in the ECA for promotions to C1
and within the C1 --> C2 --> C3 ranks. So, the days of unreviewed
promotions to C* levels may soon be gone in all areas.
