812.0. "Engineers --> Sales" by RISKS::OPP () Mon May 15 1989 13:24

      After reading the recent letter to Employees from Ken Olsen and
    a couple summary reports of the "Road Show" meetings within Engi-
    neering, I reached the conclusion that another major reorganization
    was being planned. The letter seemed to imply that people in
    Engineering would be spending more time supporting Sales - the
    "All Hands on DEC" program may be the prototype. Has anyone else
    come to the same conclusion?

    Curious in Littleton,

812.1Think bigger.WMOIS::D_MONTGOMERYI'd like to meet his tailorMon May 15 1989 14:4520
    I suspect it will be bigger than that. Considering the magnitude
    of the reorganization and redeployment undertaken by IBM in recent
    years (moving huge numbers of people from manufacturing and engineering
    into sales and services), I think DEC will probably do something
    similar -- at least in the USA.

    Not just "Engineering --> Sales", but:

    	Engineering	----
    	Manufacturing	    |
    	Distribution	    |---->  Sales & Service
    	Middle Management___|

    It's just one more sign of industry moving from manufacturing to
    service.

    ... and yes, I see "All Hands on DEC" as a prototype, though it
    may not have been intended to be that.

812.2Service = softwareTILTS::WALDOWed May 17 1989 15:506
    Point of observation from the field:

    Service appears to mean software services. The hardware field service
    groups are being actively reduced.

812.3Whose service?AUSTIN::UNLANDSic Biscuitus DisintegratumWed May 17 1989 20:4014
    re: .2

    Considering that the Field Service organization has a lot of new
    responsibility for supporting software, you could still end up working
    for "Field Service" even if you are doing software.

    I'm still not sure how this works out, though. A number of people
    have told me that the Sales Support headcount is going down, too.
    So where are all these "service" people going to be? PSS or other
    types of consulting?  Projects?

812.4Growth in FS CSC's still plannedAZTECH::JARRETTMon May 22 1989 15:518
RE: -.1

Growth in the service sector is still planned for the Customer Support Centers
(Colorado Springs, Atlanta and Westboro). Although a field service
organization the primary activity (80%) is software support. If memory
serves correct about 10% growth in headcount is planned for projected
17% in contract growth.

    From my viewpoint in the WDC Field Service area, I believe that
    F-S engineers are being moved to Sales Support and CSCs(Col and
    Atl). Once that settles down if the F-S group is not at there proper?
    levels as mgmt sees them they will tell you where to go.....

    But on the other hand I get somewhat different vibrations from Topic
    818(this Conference) ie reducing the Sales group or make them a Heck
    of a lot smarter.
