The no-Taurus-just-Celeb-V6 move was for the end of the 1989 model

of the very popular Taurus. I haven't heard anything at all about
the 1990 model year.

| re .-1
My fault for the confusion. I'm actually from Oz, although I'm
here to help them on a large project. So the cars listed refer
to CAO. I was trying to make a point about ethnocentricity. For
example, SPR's rules are very different to the US. Those eligible
for cars get a dollar figure based on their job/level and get to
choose their car within certain fairly loose limits (no turbos or
4WD). Digital handles all the leasing etc. If you exceed the dollar
figure you pay the difference on the lease (I exceeded my figure
by only $200, hence over thre years it's costing me about $3 a week).
The locals in Singapore don't get company cars. Singapore
has a 175% import duty on cars which makes their cost prohibitive.
I'm not sure what the offsets are.
So, it doesn't make sense to talk about Digital's car plan (or
Digital's anything else plan). There's no such beast. If people
want to talk about the Digital USA car plan then fine, I'll ignore
it, because it's of no interest to me. I was just annoyed by seeing
yet again this subconscious attitude that America is the centre
of the known universe. It isn't - remember, international sales
have exceeded US sales for the first time and are booming, whereas
you guys look set for a recession! (I wonder if DEC Europe will
buy Maynard?)

| With regard to the topic note: If you have a business reason to
need to know the answer to the question you're posing, then I
suspect you could get the U. S. Fleet Administration office to
share the information with you, if they've decided. You can find
the various phone numbers in the classified section of the Digital
Telephone Directory, under "FLEET ADMINISTRATION". You could start
with the office of the Fleet Manager, DTN 223-5000, PKO3-2/F15.
I don't know whether the Fleet Administration people would
consider this sensitive business information, but I suspect that
if they were in the middle of negotiations for the pricing for the
1990 acquisitions, they would prefer that the identity of vendors
on the "short list" not be disclosed. For that reason, unless
someone has a copy of an "official announcement" to post, please
keep speculation out of this conference.

not the job of anyone in "corporate" to provide the kind of
information that's being sought in this topic by replying to

you can seek it through a business channel. If it's just idle

| There are two important dates and they seem to be controlled by the
Auto Manufacturers. The first date is the last date in the Car year
that you can order a new car. When the manufacturers start to retool
for the next car year, special orders stop. This is about the time
that dealers start clearance sales. The second date is when orders can
flow again. You might try calling fleet or your local fleet
coordinator and see what the dates are.

August 30, "Can you tell me what the car of the '90s will be?"

to make one the first week in september.
September 7, "Can you tell me what the car of the '90s will be?"

I can't seriously believe that fleet is delaying new car ordering just
to force people to go to Plan B or to save money, because the opposite
will happen. I am in the same position as previous 'noters; my DEC
vehicle had several things break at once, and GELCO decided to surplus
it. Right at the moment I'm driving a rental (at nnn bucks a week)
until my emergency order is approved and the car arrives. I can't
see how forcing people to rent cars and use the emergency order process
could save money in any way, nor do I see anybody going out to buy a
car when they are perfectly within their rights to ask for an emergency
order. So I guess it must be just plain old red tape ...

775.28 | A view from Canada | TROA01::MSCHNEIDER | What .... me worry? | Sat Sep 16 1989 23:52 | 32 |
| Your experiences with Car Plan A sounds similar to what we experienced
up here in Canada. When I joined DEC last November I was told the
new car plan for 1989 would be out shortly .... well shortly ended
up being sometime in February ..... then by the time the paperwork
went through, the car was ordered and delivered it was the end of
July .... I got my 89 Taurus just in time for the 1990 model
introductions. I had an 86 Celeb to drive in the meantime so there
was no pain, but it was showing its age and needed hefty repairs.
Another wonderful idea our Fleet people came up with was the policy
of no driver paid options for the car. Pick the car, pick the color
and that's it. You say you wanted a cassette play to listen to
your Digital DVN cassettes .... sorry not possible. Oh, but by the
way whitewall tires are included! :-)
I recently rented a Lumina. Good performance with the 3.1 liter V6,
but typical GM interior .... front seat with no support, limited
instrumentation (poorly placed), power window controls that are
awkward, door handles that are flimsy, teeny glovebox ... let's just
say I wouldn't rush out to get one. If this is GM's answer to Ford's
growing market share, then I would sell any GM shares I owned. Who
knows, maybe the swoopy lines and GM marketing may beat solid
engineering and design (sound familiar in the computer world? :-) )
My Celebrity was roomier and better laid out though it also lacked any
support on the front bench seats. Its four banger was a drag and its
mushy suspension not very inspiring. As for my new Taurus with the V6
.... it beats the heck out of both!
Just my 2 cents worth!

775.32 | Shortage of Wagons to Pick From | PH4VAX::DISTRICT | District | Mon Oct 02 1989 22:26 | 11 |
| Being in Field Service, I wonder if part of the delay is due to
the fact that Ford is one of the few car makers to offer a true
wagon in a 1990 model. As I understand it GM has replaced its wagons
with something that looks more like a van. If this is true, they
could be having trouble deciding if they should keep wagons on the
list or make a change. Which in my opinion would be a good idea,
because,I don't think we need the cargo space of a wagon the way
we have in the years before.
Just my guess,

They are a little dismayed about all the misinformation that's appearing here and that some
people are making decisions based on rumor and conjecture. I suggested that they partricipate
directly here, but that's another story. They did want me to encourage folks to contact them
by phone directly @ DTN 223-1322, 1323, 1324. There are three folks responsible for addressing
New Cars -- contrary to earlier assertions here, they tell me they spend a lot of time on the
phones talking with people that contact them directly to get the facts and get them straight.
So, if you have a question about New Cars, contact Fleet Administration directly at 223-1322
and talk with Joan McKenzie, Linda Cassidy, and Greg Folks(?). I spoke with Joan and she
assured me that any of them are available to answer your questions. And NO, the new car plan is
not yet established. Call them every two weeks for an update.

Ok Ok! I suggested that they post 'correct' info here. They declined, but did
ask that I post my little blurb. I decided that doing that was better than

I agree that they should consider seriously posting good info here to correct
the dis/mis-information. However, I suspect that for some reason they (along
with much of this corporation) do not consider Notes to be an official form of
communication.
They did mention that they are looking into using VTX for the upcoming year. I
got the impression that this would be dependent on them obtaining some
technical support for VTX, that they didn't have it in-house (and therefore
might not be able to do it without additional help).

VEHICLE SELECTOR FORM
The model selections for 1990 have been finalized. The sedan choices will
include Pontiac 6000, Ford Tempo and the Ford Taurus. The station wagon
choices for Customer Service Engineers will be the Ford Taurus and Chevrolet
Celebrity. The following is a list of standard equipment. Also, for your
convenience, we have included the Driver Paid Option Forms which provide
detail regarding available options.
Please photocopy the appropriate forms and distribute to all drivers
requesting driver paid optional equipment. A personal check or money order
should be made payable to Digital Equipment Corporation and must accompany the
application if optional equipment is purchased.
A color matrix has been attached for your reference in choosing your interior
and exterior color choices. In the event color combination choices are
discontinued by the manufacturer during the model year without notification,
your second choice combination will be automatically selected.
Drivers who have previously submitted applications for 1990 vehicles will be
contacted by phone to confirm vehicle selection and information.
Please remind your drivers a current (not to exceed six months) certified
driving record (from the Department of Motor Vehicles) must accompany all new
vehicle applications.
The lead time on delivery for sedans is approximately 10 - 12 weeks, and lead
time on delivery for station wagons is approximately 14 - 16 weeks.
If your U.S. Fleet Plan A Applications form supply has been depleted, please
order form #EN-02382-10-0000-(1AG) from Northboro Digital Printing. (DTN
234-4323, or 508-351-4323)
As a result of a recent federal ruling, an Odometer Disclosure Statement must
be completed for all fleet vehicles which are scheduled to be traded or sold.
Please photocopy the attached Odometer Disclosure Statement if you do not have
an ample supply. By law, we cannot dispose of used vehicles without this form.

775.48 | how does it happen? | ATLACT::GIBSON_D | | Thu Dec 21 1989 16:24 | 11 |
| I've never had a company car before, so some newcomer questions -
Is there a way to track the status of your car?
How does delivery happen?
Is there any inspection, etc. you ought to do?
If you didn't order options, do they sometimes come anyway?
Are the delivery times mentioned in the memo on the + or - side?
|

| I never had one either, but:
> Is there a way to track the status of your car?
Your cost center manager receives a report periodically (monthly?)
indicating the status of the vehicles on order for his/her cost center.
Initially, those reports may only show that the order was logged, and
that it is being processed. At some point, delivery date will be
posted on the report.
How close actual delivery comes to the stated delivery I haven't the
foggiest. Nor can I answer any of the other questions you posed.

Larry
|
775.53 | answer from Fleet Admin | ATLACT::GIBSON_D | | Fri Dec 22 1989 16:09 | 21 |
| My understanding after talking with Joan McKenzie of FA, dtn 223-1322.
. She can confirm if you are in the system and that's all.
. Your manager should receive a weekly report on all cars in the CC.
. G.E. purchased GELCO.
. Orders are sent to GE which orders the cars from the factory to be
delivered to a dealer in your area.
. A driver's packet is sent out to you in about 4 weeks, which details
the procedures, dealer name, etc.
. She assumes I will get exactly what I ordered with one of my color
choices.
. She said to expect 12 weeks delivery since the factories shut down
for two weeks at Christmas.
. Since this is the first set of orders for 1990, they don't have much
experience yet on actual time frames.
My question on whether I might get options I didn't order was based on
the thought that the delivering dealer might have the option to deliver
a car he currently has (with the required options) or wait for the exact
factory order. Only those of you that have ordered cars in the past
can answer that. Anyone have that happen to them?

| Re: Dealer added options (or swap of optioned car for your non-optioned
order) - The last time I picked up a car, the dealer informed me he was
making $85.00 on the delivery. I figured I was doing well to get all
four tires plus a spare. In fact, I DIDN'T get a working fan motor, and
nearly smoked the engine at the grand old age of 3 miles.
Which leads us to ...
INSPECTION: My first company car was handed over to me in a covered
driveway, and I figured all was well and went on my way. Wrongamundo!
The paint had been damaged (probably by having some form of solvent
thrown over it in a storage lot), and the chrome trim on the
passenger's sided had a large dent in it. I never was able to get these
things worked out, and as I was (a) desperate for the car and (b)
didn't particularly care (sorry folks - it's true - it wasn't my car
and never would be), I didn't stress out over it. BUT, when I took
delivery of subsequent cars, I made DAMNED sure I looked all over the
sucker before I drove away.
What I learned from my most recent delivery is, look under the hood,
and perhaps even stop at a service station around the corner from the
dealer (if one exists), and make sure there are adequate supplies of
tranny fluid, brake fluid, coolant, tires, hoses, fans, and any other
thing you can possibly think of. Odds are, SOMETHING wasn't done right.
If you don't catch it, it might be a lot longer than 12 weeks before
you see another company car...
BTW, I do the same inspection drill on all rental cars, for the same
reasons (plus I don't want to miss a flight arguing with car rental
folks about somebody else's dent...). I usually find some dent or ding
worth going back and noting on the contract.
