| Have you thought of a loan program? Digital does sponsor such a
program and your PSA probably has literature on it.

First, am I right in assuming that your daughter is a high-school junior
or senior (in which case GEEP wouldn't apply)? Also, are you asking if DEC
scholarships are available based on your daughter's commendable career goal
(working with disabled kids) as opposed to grades, test scores, etc.?
I suspect the answer is "no" as far as any DEC scholarships go; however,
there might be such scholarships available from other sources.
As the parent of a college freshman and a high-school junior, my advice
would be to use all the resources available at your daughter's high
school. The counselors probably know about loads of loans, work-study
programs, co-op programs, and scholarships, and they can often give you
all the necessary forms.

| As a summer hire last summer, I attended a meeting on DEC scholarships.
They have a special scholarship program set up for Women and
Minorities. The only catch is that I believe you have to work for
DEC (as a co-op or summer hire) in order to receive the scholarship.
You can be employed in any position -- it doesn't have to be
engineering. I think the scholarship can cover up to half of tuition,
but cannot be applied to room and board.

DECUS MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CONTINUES
The DECUS Merit Scholarship Program was established by Digital Equipment
Computer Users Society (DECUS) for members and children of members. The
annual Merit Scholarship competition is conducted by the National Merit
Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), an independent not-for-profit organization
whose purposes are to identify and honor academically talented high school
students and to award college undergraduate scholarships to the most
outstanding of them. NMSC handles the selection of winners and the
administration of their awards.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
High school students who will be completing or leaving secondary school and
entering college in 1995, who are U. S. citizens, and who are members or
children of members of DECUS are eligible to compete for this scholarship.
The scholarship winner will be selected by NMSC from among those eligible
who qualify as SEMIFINALISTS and then advance to Finalist standing in the
Merit Program. Students would be notified through their high schools in
September, 1994, if they achieved this SEMIFINALIST ranking.
IF I AM A SEMIFINALIST, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Semifinalists should notify Ms. Paula Morin in the DECUS office. This
notification must be made to DECUS by November 4, 1994. Semifinalists who
qualify as finalists will be informed in March, 1995, through their schools.
Scholarship winners will be chosen on a competitive basis and without regard
to family financial circumstances. In most cases, winners will be notified
in March prior to any public announcement.
WHAT IS THE AMOUNT OF THE AWARD?
Each DECUS Scholarship award is $1,000 per year for up to four years of
college undergraduate study or until baccalaureate degree requirements are
completed, whichever occurs first.
WHAT ARE MY OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES IF I WIN?
The formal scholarship offer sent to winners by NMSC specifies terms of
acceptance and continuation of the award. The DECUS Merit Scholarship
winner must enter college in the fall term following selection and must
enroll as a full-time undergraduate in a college or university in the United
States that holds accredited status with a regional accrediting commission
on higher education. The winner must attend such a college during the day,
be enrolled in a course of study leading to one of the traditional
baccalaureate degrees, and must remain in good academic and disciplinary
standing.
