| Yes - you don't need a flyer, just show up with your badge. However,
be prepared to give them your social security number, or else they will
not let you pay by check. They're the first place that has ever
refused my business because I wouldn't part with my SSN.
I was not terribly impressed by the one in Salem, NH.

| The 'membership' is a lure. ANYONE can 'belong' to BJs. But, to get
their wholesale prices, EVERYONE (including DEC employees) have to pay
like $30/year.

691.5 | BJ's is NOT necessarily the lowest cost source! | AKOV88::BIBEAULT | Unlimited Possibilites | Fri Jan 06 1989 08:44 | 22 |
| Agree that the "membership" is a lure.
It may also be deceiving insofar as it may suggest that the
prices at which members can buy products are LESS than are
available to the general public. This is simply not true.
BJ's 'posted' prices are (the highest possible) wholesale price.
You can't buy the product for that amount since they add a 5%
service fee at the register (in addition to any applicable sales
tax). BJ's, of course, buys the products for less since it buys
in volume and qualifies for discounts making the 'posted price'
closer to retail than to wholesale.
While BJ's seldom, if ever, deviates from this pricing structure,
other stores can and do - allowing them to sell the same
merchandise at substantially lower prices when on SALE. Since
other stores can price to pass on volume discounts and/or
occassionally price BELOW real cost (loss leaders), BJ's is
not necessarily your lowest cost source.
