647.0. "Shift change advice needed" by MAAFA1::WYOUNG (Yow! Lemme outta here!) Mon Oct 31 1988 09:54
Hi.
After almost a year on first shift, I am being moved to second,
and then possibly third. This will supposedly happen within 2
weeks. Since I live with a terminally ill family member, I am
not willing to do this. However, after explaining this to my
supervisor, I was told "...we have a business to run...".
References were also made to the agreement I made when I was
hired, which they say states that I agreed to work any shift or
combination of days, hours, etc. (I haven't researched this yet,
but will soon). My year's committment is up in 2 weeks, but the
prospects for internal transfer do not look good. (See 95.9)
I was also advised that if I "just say no" I will not be terminated.
I have the option of going to personnel and having them find
something else. However, since I am a Wage class 2, something
else would no doubt consist of the mail room or answering
someone's phone - as opposed to the position I now hold
(Operator 2 at WDC - a very technical environment, but
somewhat stagnant). I wouldn't mind the shift change if
I could be promised it would be temporary or lead to something,
but no such promises are being made. Several persons in my
group are affected by this, and I am not alone in my concern
regarding this. Needless to say, morale is somewhere near
bottom around here.
any advice?

| Discuss it with your manager and with personnel. Try very
hard to be non-confrontational. Try to find a reasonable
compromise. Also, double check your employee agreement; you
may not have agreed to work any shift assigned. You might
also want to get in touch with your site's Employee Assistance
Program representative, if you can't work out a compromise
with your manager and personnel, since this is going to add
more stress to your life (which probably you don't need at
this time).

Well, my group had a meeting a couple of weeks ago with
our supervisors and our unit manager. At this meeting, we
were told that there would be another meeting of the supervisors
and the unit manager on Monday (this was on a Saturday).
After this Monday meeting, we will all find out the final
word. Well, time passes, and I hear from one of my co-workers
that he has been advised that his schedule will change (not
his shift, just one of his days off). So yesterday I asked
my supervisor about it, and was told that I would not be affected.
As a matter of fact, no one's shift will be changed.
So much for that. Guess I'm relatively safe until the next
bright idea comes along...
