580.1 | Scotland or Hudson? | SLDA::OPP | | Wed Jul 27 1988 14:15 | 8 |
| Did it mention overseas opportunities? I know Digital has a second
semiconductor plant under construction in Scotland. Closer to home,
additions and modifications have been made to the facility in Hudson,
Massachusetts. Even though I live in Hudson and work for Digital,
I'm not sure of the details of the construction.

| I believe that Digital is buying a chip facility from GTE in Phoenix(?)
and refitting it to build terminals in. We *obviously* have enough
chip capacity.

True about the facility but it's not to build terminals in. Not
sure if it's appropriate to say what will be built in it - but it's
not terminals!

chip capacity.
We *may not*, and it still may not make sense to use that facility to
make chips. Even though the building was used at some time to make
some type of chips, it is quite possible that the building could need
to be gutted and rebuilt to make the kind of chips we make in Hudson.
Not that we're special, its just that putting a few thousand devices
on a chip and a few hundred thousand devices on a chip aren't quite
the same thing.

| If its of any consequence, I saw an ad in the Boston Sunday Globe
help wanted section last Sunday, advertising for people in
semiconductor manufacturing. The address was not Hudson, I think
it was Andover. They were also looking for inspectors.

| I read in the Boston Globe that a DEC stated that the old GTE
plant in Phoenix would be used to make plated disk media for disk
drives.

| With the DRAM shortage, and recent price increases necessitated
by the shortage, maybe DEC is going to join IBM in the self sufficiency
strategy.

it doesn't mean the production plants would not go up elsewhere.

| As one of the employment managers in SCO, (It was my ads you are
talking about), let me try to add some info here.
SCO, Semiconductor Operations, Is Located in Hudson, Andover, Marlboro
and has opertions in Ayer Ireland, Edinboro Scotland, a design group
in Isreal (sp) and Japan.
Our expansion is due to the fact that the coporation has asked us
to increase the amount of Proprietary Chips we make. I am not aware
of plans to bring in house the production of commercial chips.
(Although I will admit that I doubt anyone would need my approval
or consent to do it.-)

P.S. The trip was very successful

Ayr (not Ayer - that's just up the road from here in Mass) is in
Scotland, not Ireland.
Edinburgh (not Edinboro. I assume you mean the new Queensferry plant)
has not yet finished being built. I think chip production is due to
start in 1990 or '91.
