555.0. "SEMATECH in Austin, TX" by SKIVT::JREDDING () Mon Jun 20 1988 08:38

I have heard that DEC along with other computer/chip manufacturing
companies are going to Austin, Texas to make and destroy some
silicon in hopes of developing new technologies and such.
The name of the company is SEMITECH (sp ?). I am interested in
learning more about this and if possible, some contacts so I could
    send my resume.

    Thanks

    Jim

555.1Sematech, I think..DR::BLINNPut a REAL pinhead in the Oval Office!Mon Jun 20 1988 14:126
I *think* the name is Sematech, not Semitech. Sorry, I can't
point you to any contacts, but it's possible that if it's a
joint venture, there will be DEC staff working there. Have
you asked in the OASS::JOBS conference?

    re: .0

Sematech is indeed receiving both money and people from Digital.
My understanding is that we will be seconding approximately 7-10
people from the Semiconductor Engineering and Production areas.
These people would remain DEC employees, but would work onsite
in Austin for a specific length of time.

Sematech is not an engineering research venture; it's prime purpose
is to do manufacturing research, making current technology IC's
faster, cheaper, better quality, and so forth. They will be starting
out using IBM's high-density DRAM manufacturing process, with a VAX
    Cluster based Manufacturing Control System.

More on this story as it develops.

SEMATECH is a consortium of representives from the U.S. semiconductor
industry whose charter is to develop better methodologies for manufacturing.
SEMATECH is funded by those companies and by the Pentagon, who is concerned
about the availability of chips from non-U.S. semiconductor manufacturers.

Recently, DEC won a bid to provide a manufacturing control system (and
won the bid over IBM) which will run on VAX/DECnet architecture. The
program was a joint proposal by DEC and Intel, and included bids from
Consilium, SAS, BBN, and WordPerfect. This control system will provide
the standard for the industry through the 1990s.

The project will be done out of the branch office at Austin, Texas. For
more information, contact Mitch Federman at BIMVAX::FEDERMAN.

I've taken the liberty of changing the title of the topic note.

excerpted from an article Quality magazine 8/88 page 13

Sematech, a consortium of semiconductor manufacturers, has been
set up to sponsor and conduct research in semiconductor manufacturing
technology. The plan is for Sematech-located at the University of
Texas, Austin-to validate in its own facility the research that it
sponsors in advanced processes, materials and equipment. The Austin
site will simulate Sematech members' production lines. (Neither
chip design nor sales is in Sematech's charter).

Results of the research will be transferred to member companies
for commercial application, thus hoping to assure that the US
semiconductor industry will continue in its revitalization (see
    Quality, 2/88 p.13)

Sematech today has 14 members: Advanced Micro Devices, AT&T,DEC,
Harris, HP, Intel, IBM, LSI Logic, Micron Technology, Motorola,
NCR, National Semiconductor, Rockwell International, and TI. The
    consortium is seeking assitional members.
