435.0. "Corporate Identity Stds for stationery" by PLDVAX::MORRISON (Bob M. LMO2/P41 296-5357) Thu Jan 07 1988 12:20

There has been some discussion in notes 174.46 to .49 about corporate iden-
tity standards, but I would like to focus on stationery in this note.
I first heard about these standards in DECWORLD (the paper, not the show)
several months ago. According to this article, all sites are supposed to have
a copy of the Corporate (Company?) Identity Manual. So far I haven't been able
to get my hands on one, but I have already seen the stationery and there is a
problem. The DEC logo on the envelopes is halfway down on the left edge, where
it may be covered by the mailing label. The letter paper is worse; the logo is
about 1/4 of the way down the page, where the "Dear Mr. Smith:" would normally
go. Does anyone know why this is so? Is it supposed to match the style of cer-
tain European countries? According to note 174.46 (quotation from manual), it
is OK for national style to be reflected in DEC stationery, so why can't we
have stationery with the DEC logo where a corporate logo usually is in the U.S.?

Well, I just went and looked at a new envelope here. You're right!
I, also, just got a large gray envelope in the mail and the placement
matches that of the letter envelope. Its not a problem on the large
envelope, but looks out of place on the letter envelope. Either
someone blew it on the layout, or the intent was to place the logo
and the *site* return address such that you couldn't, easily,
cover them up with a personal address sticker. (Use DEC envelopes
    for your personal mail.)

The 3" by 5" stick-on labels are similarly flawed.
The return address is centered horizontally and positioned vertically
on a baseline 1" down out of three.
The digital logo is baselined half way down, and extends more than 1.25"
from the left edge.
This leaves an effective area for the destination address of less than
half the label.

It seems we have a case where style and consistency have taken precedence
over the functional characteristics of the stationery.
Business cards with electronic addresses and DTNs seem to be part of the
same problem.

Where can we push back?

435.3...up in smoke...TUNDRA::RICERTue Jan 12 1988 13:2611
The other day I ran across a stack several inches thick, of the
old stationery. It was being thrown out. I now have my supply
of scrap paper for the year... But I wonder how many $ worth of
perfectly good stationery and envelopes have gone up in smoke, to
make way for this new stuff with the strange design.

I don't mind the logo on the new business cards, but replacing
hyphens in phone numbers with periods is a little hard to under-
stand. So what if they do it that way in Europe? What does (or
should) that have to do with the way we do it in the U.S.?

Just think what the cost will be when almost all Mass DEC facilities
get a new area code in July.....

New business cards, product brochures, letterheads, etc, etc.
    What a mess!

I've solved that one already: I never put my job title on the card. I
don't even put my group's name (names change too fast around here). I just
put a two or three word name of what it is my group works on, and I pick
the level of "my group" so that it reasonably stable.

If you have complaints about the new stationery, I believe Peter
Phillips in West Concord is the responsible party.

According to a recent item on Livewire and in DTW, the Company Identity Com-
mittee, chaired by V.P. John Sims, is responsible for identity standards. Is
Peter Phillips on the committee?
