431.0. "Facilities south of Rt 9??" by 12118::LMATTHEWS (AMON & BOWIE's MAMA) Mon Dec 28 1987 15:39

I have heard a rumor that DEC is planning to build a facility south of
Rt. 9 (possibly Ashland). Does anyone know if that is true?

The only facility that I know of is Franklin. Why is DEC so reluctant
to build anything in the southern part of the state? The past few
years alot of businesses are putting up facilities in that part of the
state.  Why not Dec?

Within the last three weeks alone I have met 4 people from that part
of the state who work for Dec

Westport (near Fall River)	Working in Shrews.
Raynham				Also "     "
Hanson				Working in MRO
Duxbury				Working in OGO

I work in Marlboro and live in Mansfield. I had worked in FXO for 3
1/2 years and I loved being so close to work. There are an awful lot
of people who must drive great distances just to work at Digital.

How about it Dec - There is life (and very qualified people) south of
the Mass. Pike....

    When I used to work in Delaware, some of us often wished DEC would
    open up some engineering facilities "south of Rt. 9" -- around
    250 miles south.  ;^)

    Since it is cheaper to live the further away from Boston you are,
    it would seem that we could benefit in terms of getting people
    relocated up here if we had more facilities South and West of
    Worcester.
431.2There is life past Rte 9 and 495VOYAGE::PKOCZWARAThu Dec 31 1987 08:4612
    There is life past Rte 9. DEC has acouple of facilities in Westboro.
    Mainly it is Field Service Headquarters, but our little group gets
    to stay in WFR. DEC is in the process of leasing a fairly large
    building behind the Marriott off of RTE 9. Also, the Shrewsbury
    facility is always being expanded (Storeage Systems). So it
    looks like DEC is slowly moving south and west of RTE 9. To my
    knowledge there are two facilities in Westboro (WFR, YWO), one in
    Southboro (Terminals), the Shrewsbury site, Franklin???, and the
    new building in Westboro.

    P.S. I do have a job opening for a Senior P/A or S/A. Please check
    the jobs notes and the VTX job book, if anyone is interested.
431.3How far south?ANGORA::MORRISONBob M. LMO2/P41 296-5357Thu Dec 31 1987 16:415
   All of the facilities in -.1 are within 5 miles of Route 9. I think the
original note is talking about plants 10-25 miles south of Route 9.
   There is more to "community service" than raising funds for the United Way
and the like. It is not a community service to concentrate so many jobs in one
area that the cost of housing goes sky-high and traffic becomes a nightmare.

The new Building in Westborough is at 8 Tech Drive in the Westborough
Technology Park. It is a 104K sqft building that will house Corporate
and U.S. Area Manufacturing and Materials people coming from the Maynard,
Northborough and Southborough. The proposed site code is WTP. Occupancy is
slated for August 1988.

  That's interesting but it can't be more than 5 miles south of Route 9. It
might save some mileage if there are any people slated for the move who now
work in Maynard and live 'far' south of route 9.

    Does anybody know what plans, if any, there are for the Franklin
    facility?
431.8NTSC::MICKOLThu Apr 28 1988 13:547
Hi Lynne! I heard they are going to start up a "state-of-the-art"
manufacturing process there (cables or something). I heard this awhile ago and
was down in Franklin a month or so ago and there doesn't seem to be much
happening.

431.9HEY KEN ! THERE'S LAND SOUTH OF RTE 9 !BOSHOG::PARCELSFri May 13 1988 12:2021
    I'm a new DEC'er
    Have heard rumors of DEC ownership of SIX SQ MILES of land in Plymouth,
    MA - but nothing about what will be/is being done with it ? It'd
    be great for me...I live in Brockton and work in NRO(Northboro)...its
    about 55 miles one way...

    Agree with previous comments re: getting good people in the "south"
    and adverse impact on commuting,traffic,housing,taxes etc etc etc
    in nearby residential areas.

    I like where I live now - I just wish DEC were a little bit closer
    at times....what about the Mansfield area ? or plymouth, if there
    really is anything there ?

    Thanks for any help/info/solace you can provide.....

    Perhaps an inventory would help. I constantly come across employees
    from "south of Rt 9" who have the same concern; I wonder how many
    there are.

431.14Land in PlymouthXCUSME::KINGGive me a ChallengeWed May 18 1988 03:2310
    DEC does have land in Plymouth. But it may be sold by now. I've
    heard that plans were to sell it due to its close proximity to Edison
    power lines and Pilgrim Station. As far as I know the land abutts
    one of Boston Edison's transmission line easments in Manomet.
    Last fall there was an article in the local paper regarding this
    issue.

    Has anyone else heard anything about it?

    Is it in Manomet off of Beaver Dam Road? Name of the road could
    be wrong but Beaver is part of it. Could be Pond.

431.18Zip Code SortSHARE::PIERPONTTue Jun 14 1988 07:567
    Corp has a way to sort any and all employees by Zip Code.

    They use this when they are looking at building a new plant,
    ie: what is our "current presence" in the community?

    Also used for special cases when DEC wants to expand in an area.
    They will/can do special electronic mailings for a cause.

I was told that DEC bought land in Charlton, Mass, which is between
    Worc, and Spgfld. This was about 5 years ago?

    any NEws?
