389.0. "DEC largest workforce in Mass.?" by PLDVAX::MORRISON (Bob M. LMO2/P41 296-5357) Thu Sep 24 1987 17:37

  In another notesfile there is a transcript of a Boston Globe article that
says DEC is the largest (corporate) employer in Mass. Is this true? I thought
it was Raytheon.

389.1QUARK::LIONELWe all live in a yellow subroutineFri Sep 25 1987 00:057
    We used to be #3 behind Raytheon and AT&T. What with AT&T having
    a lot of layoffs in Andover, we may have moved up a bit.

    I know that in New Hampshire, we run neck-and-neck with Sanders,
    though I think that we've now pulled ahead of them to the #1 spot.

389.2At least #1 in Mass, perhaps #1 in N.E.DENTON::AMARTINAlan H. MartinFri Sep 25 1987 23:368
Ever since joining Digital in June '81, I've never heard us described as
less than #2 in Massachusetts, behind Raytheon. Did AT&T move up recently,
or did we pass them a long time ago?

Within the past few years, I thought I've heard Digital described as #1 in
New England, although I don't recall any of the sources as seeming
particularly authoritative.

389.3Neutron Jack lost the #1 spot which GE had heldDELNI::GOLDSTEINExplicitly politicalWed Sep 30 1987 16:0813
    It wasn't AT&T who was ahead of us, it was GE.

    AT&T's Merrimack Valley Works isn't all that huge, even if you add
    the headcount from AT&T's other operations. GE, on the other hand,
    has the Aircraft Engine works in Lynn, the transformer works in
    Pittsfield, and some other facilities in both parts of the
    Commonwealth. But they've been having hard times lately, and have
    laid off quite a few people, putting them into the #3 or lower spot.

    So it's either us or Raytheon for #1. I suppose if you count all
    the people who've worked at Raytheon during a given year, they're
    ahead, but if you count net-after-layoffs, it's not so clear. ;-)

389.4before the big bang?REGENT::EPSTEINBruce EpsteinFri Oct 02 1987 18:513
    Perhaps the AT&T perception is a holdover from the days when New
    England Telephone was part of Big Mama... after all, there are
    *lots* of telephone workers, aren't there?
389.5Raytheon among Mass. based Corp.'sNAAD::BATESHow soon is now?Sun Oct 18 1987 20:076
    Last I heard, Raytheon was the #1 employer for corporations headquarted
    in Mass., GE & GTE (whose corporate headquarters are not in Mass.)
    both employee more people (in Mass.) than Raytheon.
