308.0. "How can I help the Cousteau Society?" by SLDA::OPP () Thu Apr 30 1987 21:16

I contribute a small amount of money each year to the Cousteau
Society, the organization which produces the "Undersea World of
Jacques Cousteau". In their latest solicitation, they indicated
a need to replace Calypso's on-board computer. I thought since
a MicroVAX had been used on the Stars & Stripes and Kookaburra
12-meter yachts, that a MicroVAX might be appropriate for their
use as well and suggested this to them.

Today, one of their staff called me and said they are more in-
terested in tieing all their office PC's into a coherent network
and possibly into the ship-based computers. Something DECnet
can handle via satellite links, similar to our Easynet links to
Europe, Australia, etc. I referred the C.S. person to Corporate
Contributions, which certainly is a good place to start.

I thought that since the Cousteau Society was really seeking
a corporate partner to help them analyze and develop their
computer needs/resources, that there must be a better contact.
IF anyone knows of such a contact within DEC, please reply here
or to SLDA::OPP if you'd rather not post it.

    Thank you,

    Greg

Wow! This would be nifty. I'd even be willing to join the Cousteau
    Society to make it happen.

(When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be on the Calypso crew. Along
with being a doctor and a lawyer. I still have "The Calypso Fantasy",
but now I'd rather do that than either of the other two.)
308.3You can dive with the Cousteaus!SYSENG::OPPFri May 01 1987 14:4313
    RE: .2

You can take vacations with the Cousteau staff. They are typically
on tropical islands and involve daily scuba and surface diving.
Surprisingly, they are not that expensive. A family membership
costs $28 and a single membership is only $20. Their address is

    	Cousteau Society
    	930 West 21st Street
    	Norfolk, VA 23517

I re-read my submission and noticed that I forgot to state that
memberships are $20 or $28 depending upon single vs. family, re-
spectively. The vacations I believe start at approximately $600
and go up from there. The membership provides a quarterly magazine,
a monthly newsletter, and solicitous mailings about 2 or 3 times
    per year.

There are two wonderful DEC produced video tapes regarding the
Kookabura and the Stars and Stripes. They show how the microvax
on board the ship used information from the network of systems at
the central site. These folks might be interested in them. (One
of the two tapes is called "The 12th Man", which is the MicroVAX)

BTW, the boats are not allowed to communicate with shore after the
race starts. So, neither boat used DECnet, just to be sure that
nobody would claim that illegal communications were used. There
is a shot in one of the tapes that shows a floppy being flipped
on board just before cast off.

The other tape is called "The Measure of Performance".

I am sorry to say that I don't know the order numbers, if there
are any. But, they were produced by Media Services in MKO1.

308.7L.A. Sales working the issueSLDA::OPPMon May 11 1987 23:0316
First, thanks to all those who replied to my request with
suggestions. Second, the good news - I called the Los Angeles
district sales office, near the office of the Cousteau Society
that had contacted me, and they have set up a meeting with two
representatives of the Society. The purpose of the meeting is
to determine the computing needs of the C.S. I was impressed
by the enthusiasm of the two sales people I spoke with and their
willingness to work a potential contact who is looking for a
    contribution/purchase package.

By the way, if anyone has decided to join the Cousteau Society
as a result of reading this note, I'd be interested in knowing
    it. Thank you.
