| Sure, Paris (France) hires outside UM's. DEC should hire the
best for the money...inside or outside. Too many organizations
are inbred already!

| Another consideration in many decisions is also cost. If an
off-the-street candidate locally is EQUAL to an internal candidate who
requires re-location, is in the mid-point or higher of salary scale, etc.,
and you're measured on margin, you hire the lowest hit on margin!

251.4 | sort of the best | BISTRO::PATTERSON | dont duke it out=>nuke it out! | Tue Jan 20 1987 04:05 | 10 |
| ....as long as we hire the best!
Well, sort of. The best for the price and availability. I
think we fool ourselves sometimes. We rarely hire the absulote
best. It's too expensive, and uninteresting for the very best.
As a very larg company (now) we need good average long-term employees
for a fair market price. The reason we like to use the word "best"
is that we do not want to feel excluded in that catagory.

| Interesting topic ! Guess we "old folks" have to admit that "fresh
blood" is sometimes needed to avoid sklerosis! Right Keith ?
On the other hand I have seen lots of chaos when some group was
merely composed of "fresh blood". Somebody must be there to show
rather demonstrate the "Digital way of working".
By the way, did anyone explain yet what this commitee is that we
are talking about ? Please help the ignorant !

| This policy is still in effect and the MDC is quiet busy from what
I can tell, sometimes the internal applicants are just not available
where they are needed, so external hires can't be avoided.

BTW There is no such thing as a Branch Manager anymore...
