231.0. "Free PCs?" by BPOV09::GRAHAM (Dr. John) Tue Dec 09 1986 22:30

I have heard that in the past, Digital has donated PCs to various
local police departments. I understand that the Oakham PD is looking
for a PC, and they would like to know who they should contact within
the company. Any help along these lines will be appreciated.

Try calling Corporate Public Relations Consultant at DTN 251-1565.
He/she could probably point you in the right direction.

I've heard from a fairly reliable source that there is a lot of
computer equipment which goes to salvage. What happens when it
get to salvage is that it gets destroyed and then sold to scrap
dealers. If this is really true it seems like a waste to me. Seems
to me that could at least sell it cheaply to schools or whatever.

At one time Salvage kept a warehouse with excess/scrapped/no longer
wanted equipment (both computer and office). One could go over and look
around occasionally pick up an office chair for $5 or a file cabinet or
a memory board etc.

As told to me, the story goes like this...

It seems however, that not all the equipment that was being listed as
scrap was being scrapped. Some was being sold under the table to
surplus and salvage stores. The scam was broken by the IRS
investigating the unusually high standard of living versus reported
income of certain Digital employees working in the Salvage group.

Since then, all computer equipment sent to Salvage is ground up and
hauled away.

Oh well.
