What is Digitals grand strategy, and how does it relate to new products development? In 1980 Ken Olsen went on videotape and explained the company philosophy as having five points. 1 Growth was not a goal 2 We must make a profit 3 Do a good job for the customer 4 Recognition of people within the work force as our lifeblood 5 Honesty Although this is an operating philosophy that might be an effective management style it doesn't define our strategy in the marketplace. Does anyone have ideas where the company strategy for new products can be found?

re: .-1 Thank you, Peter. I know where the "grand strategy" is published. And I'm sure it was mailed to you (.0), and you've overlooked it. The "President's Letter" in the Annual Report is the definitive public statement of Digital's goals. The operative word for FY87 is "connect". The four appearances of the word "computer" in the President's Letter are followed by the world "network". Beyond that, the officers of Digital make regular speeches on the record before the security analysts and trade press and these statements are reported. DEC will publish the remarks of Ken Olsen at the annual meeting of the shareholders a short time after November 6, 1986. | |||||

Take a look at the Sept. 1984 and Nov. 1984 issues of DECWORLD. (If you don't have them, give me a call. We have a few copies left.) Also, look at current and back issues of MGMT MEMO. Richard Seltzer DTN 251-1305 |
