201.0. "Hand Carried Items brought in at Logan" by COVERT::COVERT (John Covert) Thu Oct 16 1986 17:47

This was sent from Jim Blackley, European Distribution at Ayr.

It sounded a little strange, so I contacted the Chief Inspector at Customs,
Mr Jack Holtzman, and found that this applies only to items over $1000
requiring a formal entry.

The purpose is to have such things handled by a broker in the freight area in
order to speed up passenger processing.

Please note that ALL equipment, components, etc that require shipping to the
U.S. will now have to go via Skypack or normal DEC transport.

Subject: HAND CARRIED GOODS VIA BOSTON

			I M P O R T A N T
			*************************

Please be aware that the Customs Authority at Boston Airport have advised that
it is no longer acceptable that commercial goods be hand carried and presented
for customs clearance through the passenger channels. Such goods should, until
further notice, be imported through normal freight channels only. Goods that
are hand carried will be removed by customs and a receipt provided,
subsequent clearance will of course be a much slower (and costlier) process.

The above situation is a result of abuse of the system. A Digital employee has
already been stopped and goods removed so please advise the relevant people in
your locations of the situation.

This restriction may encourage some people to try and beat the system by not
declaring or not raising paperwork; this of course is illegal and would
present a very serious risk to the company - and the individual. therefore it
is advised that you monitor any request for shipping docs for hand carried
material that is being withdrawn on being told of the above ruling.

Regards
Jim Blackley.
