198.0. "PP&P manual online via VTX" by TLE::AMARTIN (Alan H. Martin) Thu Oct 09 1986 14:34
In the following memo, please note the use of the phrase
PILOT PROJECT
The on-line copy of the PP&P manual is not a service which is guaranteed to
exist for the indefinite future. If something goes wrong with the
experiment, such as UCOUNT's load becoming unbearable, or the database
not being accessed by anyone (fat chance), then it will disappear.
So please use it in the spirit in which it is offered and don't regard it
as a permanent network fixture.

The Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual is now available on-line!
The Spit Brook Road and Shrewsbury (MA) Personnel organizations are cooperating
in a joint pilot project designed to provide the information contained in the
hard-copy policies manual to all employees via a VAX VTX infobase.
The VTX implementation will contain all the text in the printed version,
organized in menus analogous to the printed table of contents. In addition,
the on-line manual will provide the following improvements over the printed
version:
o The infobase will be updated *immediately* as any printed updates
are generated.
o The infobase will be available to all employees, 24 hours a day,
even from off-site locations.
o There is "keyword" access into the manual. This means that you can
specify a subject (like "relocation") and VTX will give you access
to every policy that relates to that subject.
o VTX gives you the ability to print pages from the manual on your
system's printer or copy them to your own account for later reference.
Here at ZKO, the P&P Manual is available through the site VTX server. If your
system is not set up to access the site server automatically, just use the
following two DCL commands:
$ DEFINE VTX$SERVER UCOUNT::"""43="""
$ MCR VTXPAD
(NOTE: Your system must be running Version 2 of VAX VTX; contact your system
manager if you need assistance installing or running VTX)
On-line help is available at all levels of VTX. Just press the PF2 key. The
P&P Manual infobase also includes a menu choice for getting help with keywords.
During this pilot project, we actively solicit feedback on the infobase. If you
have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please send them to me at
UCOUNT::LYNCH.
Thank you.
