148.0. "DTN Goes to Europe" by DAMSEL::MOHN (space for rent) Mon Jun 30 1986 23:13
Effective July 1 DTN users in the US will be able to reach European
DEC locations by dialing DTN numbers. Most DEC sites in Europe have
been tied together for some time now by European DTN (EDTN); this new
capability ties together the two voice networks. This is the result
of considerable work by telecom people on both sides of the Atlantic
and has involved making numerous changes to both networks to
accommodate the union.
Information regarding individual European locations will be found in
the July issue of the US Telephone Directory in the European Area
section. Individual listings for European employees will not appear
in this issue. Many, if not most, European employees' DTN numbers can
be found in ELF. We have made every effort to assure that the numbers
in ELF and elsewhere are correct; however, there may be cases where
the data bases have not been updated and spurious numbers will show
up. The most likely error is that the listed number will be less than
seven digits long. The US DTN will not respond to these numbers. Do
not try to dial them; you will just sit waiting for the local PBX to
time out.
In Europe the DTN access code is often "7" rather than the "8" in
general use in the US and Canada. Many Europeans have the habit of
quoting their DTN number as 7foo, where foo is what the US DTN user
would recognize as the DTN number. There is a considerable campaign
mounted in Europe to try to get people to quote their DTN number
without the access code. If you do see an 8-digit DTN number starting
with "7", ignore the "7". Note that some DTN codes do start with "7":
721, 751, etc.
In the initial phases of this service ALL international transatlantic
calls will be physically routed via the international public network.
These calls will be charged for accordingly in the US. In the future
we will be installing private transatlantic circuits to carry much of
this traffic at a lower cost to DEC. Discounting arrangements will be
explored when these circuits are installed.
Happy dialing!

| And there was I thinking the only reason I never got any calls from
across the pond was 'cause nobody wanted to talk to me! :-)
Welcome to the big wide world of DTN, America!
