134.1 | There are lots of DEC temps | NFL::CANNOY | I am only an egg. | Tue Jun 10 1986 21:24 | 15 |
| Surprise!!
There is just such a group. I am a Digital temp and have been for
a year and a half now (which is apparently longer than the law allows).
There are currently a couple hundred temps working out of a cost
center in the Mill. However there is a need for about 500 more bodies
in the area the Mill serves, and these are filled with contract temps.
I have a DEC employee number, a regular badge, am registered on
ELF, etc., but I receive NO benefits, except the ability to purchase
stock.
Your other ideas sound intriguing, but would management allow people
to pick up two salaries from DEC?

We don't even get to buy stock here, think yourself lucky.

Why not? Whats DEC's reason for this -- different wage scale,
personnel red tape?

No need for two salaries. The CC who requests an employee's
part-time services will pay that employee's permanent CC, who
in turn will pay the employee. Problem is to allow salaried
employees to get OT (wage class 3?). But this will probably
still be more cost effective than a new hire or outside
consultant.

134.4 | MKO has temps too | PSGMKH::WARD | | Thu Jun 26 1986 12:37 | 13 |
| Merrimack also has a DECtemp program. That's how I got in (through
the side door one might say). My understanding of why no benefits
is for legal reasons. This is also the same reason why starting
last year, I think, DECtemps _must_ take 2 consecutive months off.
In other words, be terminated for 2 months then rehired.
Merrimack has also recently started a program with permanent
"floaters". These people are similar to temps, however, they do
have benefits and are not required to take 2 months off. Personally,
I have done enough floating to last me quite a while :-).

| Last I heard, DECtemps only had to take 30 consecutive days off...
HOWEVER, the catch is that they are required (for legal reasons
- something to do with preserving their TEMPORARY status) to take
10 weeks off during the year.
Apparently, there was some problem wherein if TAGS worked a full
year, they were just as entitled to receive benefits as "real"
employees. So, they changed the rules so you COULDN'T work long
enough to get caught up in that.
