128.1 | What I did... | MTV::KLEINBERGER | Gale Kleinberger | Wed May 28 1986 20:59 | 80 |
|
Hi Al...
I just went through the how to find a job... maybe I can help
out a little...
Places to look:
1. NEWTON::JOBS Conference
2. VAX VTX on-line jobs listing
- updated daily
3. DIGITAL Jobs book
- very slow and the pre-screening personnel
are sometimes hard to get past
Other things I did...
1. Contact all friends and send them a copy of your
resume and ask them to forward it onto anyone that
they think may want it.
2. I am in DIS and I contacted all the regional MIS
Managers in the field. I called them personally
and even if they say they don't have any openings,
ask them if they would mind if you sent them a resume'
anyway. One field Manager told me he had no openings
and after seeing my resume, I got two interviews
from two different offices, and one offer. Also
ask them to forward your resume on if they can.
3. Go through NOTEers. There are several that have let
it be known they are of management level. Send them
mail, and ask if they have heard anything.
4. DIS has a Human Resource Management person - if
your field has anyone like that, go see them. The
one person I saw, right off the top of his head,
had me call several people, and in using his name
it got me through the door.
5. Go see your personnel rep and see what job codes
match your level, and read in the jobs book and see if
any of those interest you. If they do, try to find out
who the key people in that field is, and call him
(her) and go see him (her). Tell them you
are trying to break into that field and get their
advice and THEN FOLLOW IT!
6. Also don't discount your present boss, if there is
several people who have to leave (s)he will want
to get you off his cost center quickly - use him/her
as a source.
The EXTRA step...
* In any interview, if I had to tell a manager I did
not know something, I came back and FOUND out... then I
wrote up a small paper (for lack of a better term), on
what the question was, why I did not know - what I was
able to find out about it, how to use it and how in
using it it would better the managers organization and
I sent it to him/her via DECMAIL/VAXMAIL.
This shows them you were interested
enough to find out and motivated enough to
find out, and also reminds them you are
still looking for a job 8-).
* Also if they mention a paper they are trying to get,
or a review of some process, do your darnest to get
ahold of it, and send it to them... same reasoning
as above applies...
Don't give up hope - also - don't set your sights low. I made sure
I interviewed for several job codes higher than my persent one,
so I would be sure to be challenged!!!
Remember to always send a DECMAIL/VAXMAIL followup letter.
The interviews will come, and so will the offers - GOOD LUCK!!
- Gale

128.2 | don't forget the resume! | CURIE::ARNOLD | | Thu May 29 1986 15:06 | 23 |
| And don't forget the importance of the resume. A resume will introduce
you to a potential new manager before you ever physically meet him/her,
and it *does* create a definite first impression. Before I joined
DEC, I worked for a very successful headhunting firm in Texas (in
one particular month alone, revenue was $500K just from placement
fees to the employers), and learned alot about resumes, formatting
them, what should be there, not be there, etc. I'd be more than
happy to critique your resume & offer suggestions if you want to
vaxmail it to me.
Also (having just gone thru this very recently), I agree with Gail
in .-1 where you should contact managers in areas/groups where you'd
like to work. The VTX jobs database is obviously not "real time"
and many times I found that after seeing a new posting for a job
I was interested in, it had already been filled.
And again, be *sure* to let your current manager know that you're
looking to move. Many new potential managers won't even talk to
you unless you've done that step. Frequently (although not always,
as discussed in note 120) a manager will want to loook out for
your best interests & he/she is in the best position to help you.

128.4 | How 'bout CSSE? | ATLANT::SCHMIDT | I Use VMS. My Cereal? Raw Bits! | Fri May 30 1986 18:38 | 31 |
| Al:
Specifically addressing your situation, you might
investigate CSSE (customer Services Systems Engineering).
They perform a variety of tasks:
o Helping to engineer products so that the products are
functional, useable, reliable, and maintainable.
o Setting the maintenance strategy and pricing.
Overseeing implementation of that strategy.
o Providing continuing support of a product once
it's in the field.
o Feeding back the experience so that newer follow-on
products may be improved.
(and that's surely not an exhaustive list!) The talents
range from heavy-duty "fly-and-fixers" through project-
managers to MBA-type business folks. Well-seasoned ex-
Field Service types (or soon-to-be ex-Field Service types
:-) are one of their bread and butter employment pools.
And CSSE, like Engineering, is located in a wide range of
sites, not just in the greater-Maynard area. They have
hardware, software, and system groups, and (usually) good
connections back to the rest of DEC.

Yup. I just got my new job through a NOTES friend, though I
wouldn't go so far as "avoiding" personnel. Use everything you can,
and don't be shy about sending mail, and FOLLOWING UP! I got a lot
of valuable interviews through the personnel people in ZK before
I arranged the "best" one on my own. It doesn't hurt to have a warm
body pushing your resume under people's noses.

128.9 | RESUME INPUTS | BPOV09::YGONZALEZ | | Mon Dec 07 1987 10:11 | 25 |
| I am just reading your note, which is dated 1986, and I figured
that probably you can help me out. At the present time, I am
searching for another job, and to tell you the truth, has been very
discouraging.
I have talked to several people, managers, reps, peers, etc. to
have some insight thoughts about my resume (content and format)
and I have had "millions" of opinions: some of them valid, of
course, but others are not. You do not have any idea how many times
I have changed my resume taking in consideration these inputs!
I wish I could have a resume that could reflect what I can really
perform since anytime I send a resume to apply for a particular
position, I get from response that I do not have the experience
they are looking for. Really, I am getting tired and frustrated
(sorry to say it, but it is the truth!) What I am really concerned
is that eventually I could reflect this frustration in an interview
session and it won't be as positive as it should.
Can I send you a copy of my resume for your review and inputs?
Also, you might know of someone who can use my professional services.
I just finished my Masters degree in Applied Management. Graduation
date: January 22, 1988.
Thank you.

128.10 | The resume should be tailored to the job | SWATT::POLIKOFF | See SWATT run. Run SWATT run. | Mon Dec 07 1987 13:39 | 8 |
| Resumes have to be tailored to the job opening. That does not
mean lieing. It means that if you were a programmer that wrote in
many computer languages and the job asked for one particular language,
the hiring manager may not care what other languages you write in.
He may want to know if you are proficient in the language he needs
so your resume better say how fluent you are in that language and
what programs you wrote using that language.
This applies to any field of engineering.
|
128.11 | Tailor the resume for the hiring manager? | REGENT::EPSTEIN | Bruce Epstein | Tue Dec 08 1987 10:34 | 20 |
| >> It means that if you were a programmer that wrote in

>> He may want to know if you are proficient in the language he needs

>> what programs you wrote using that language.
As with any generalization, there are exceptions:
If the job calls for programmers of language X, and you have never
programmed in X, but you have learned 6 other languages, that fact
could be significant if there are no other applicants who know X.
(I've hired people in this situation.) You can't know exactly what
biases the hiring manager might have, so just present yourself with
the best truthful description you can.
By the way, this conference is not the right place to look for a
job; for that, use OASS::JOBS.

| Looking for help....
There is a strong possibility that my spouse may be taking up the offer
of a job transfer from the UK to the States (she doesn't work for DEC),
specifically the Sacremento/Falsom area.
If this happens then I would be looking at the possibility of trying to
get a transfer with DEC... current climate within the company
permitting of course.
OK the help part.... being geographically ignorant - I know California
is just right of the lefthand side of the US - what locations should I
be looking at regards OJP in addition to Sacremento. I would be willing
to commute.
Thanks

128.14 | Grim | SWAM2::MCCARTHY_LA | Lie to exit pollers | Wed Jun 10 1992 11:39 | 19 |
| I think the next nearest office to Sacramento might be Modesto; That'd
be a heck of a commute! Let me speculate on what'll probably happen,
based on my experience:
o If you try to got through Personnel (or Human Resources or Strategic
Humans or whatever), you'll hear "Go away. Hiring freeze". Period.
o If you go to the hiring manager, the best you'll get is something
that boils down to: "See me when you get here with all you
[immigration] paperwork in order." Remember, though, that the U.S.
field (which is what you'll find outside of Silicon Valley in N. Cal.) is,
by all accounts, going to be doing some big-time "rightsizing" over the
next two quarters.
MHO: I'd encourage you to consider Digital in your job search. But,
don't put all (or even most) of your eggs in that basket.
Good luck,
Larry.

Getting all the way into Silicon Valley (Santa Clara, Cupertino, Mountain View,

You should also take a serious look at housing expenses in the area, since

| Being a California native, I feel compelled to respond...
If your spouse is going to be working in the Sacraments/Folsom
area, the only Digital office you could reasonably consider
would be Sacramento. They are considered part of the San
Francisco District and have software delivery people (EIS)
sales, and field engineers. That's about it except for management.
Modesto (the next nearest office) is a very small field office
with a small sales and field engineer staff.
Livermore may be a possibility but again it is a very small field
office.
San Francisco office would be a 1-2+ hour commute (with traffic).
I believe Apple or HP or one of those computer brandx types have
a facility in the Sacramento/Folsom area.
Good luck with your job search.

I'm a California native also, and currently work in the Livermore
facility. RE. other California sites: California is around 850 or so
miles long. Sacramento and the rest of the Bay Area are about 1 1/2
hours apart by car (assuming light to medium traffic).
Trust me, you wouldn't want to live in Sacramento and commute to any
other DEC site. The drive would be at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way.
As was said, both Modesto and Livermore are small remotes that can
barely support life as we know it.
BTW, I hope you like hot weather. California's Central Valley gets
blistering hot in the summer (100 to 115 dg F. isn't uncommon).
Sacramento is right there in between the coast and the Sierra Nevada.
Hope this helps,
John D.

128.22 | Sacramento exit poll | GLDDST::HURST_JO | "John D. Hurst - GLDDST::HURST_JO" | Fri Jun 26 1992 14:19 | 59 |
| Hello from Sacramento (and Folsom, I live there).
Here's some info on Folsom and Sacramento.
Folsom is:
Approximately 12 miles East of Sacramento - Sacramento sprawls out,
A small rural bedroom community to Sacramento- I'm guessing 35k people,
Quite country (It's Rodeo time in June), though its progressing
Very fast growing - though it's slowed down lately,
(LOTS of people from Los Angeles and the Bay area infested the area)
15-25 minutes from the Sacramento office,
Housing ranges from $95K to $850K
(surrounding areas upto and over $1 million if your pocket book allows)
45 minutes to 1.5 hours from Excellent snow skiing (Lake Tahoe)
1.5 - 2 Hours to the Beach, San Francisco, ~3.5 to Montery
Sacramento (proper) is:
Old Sacramento (Historic gold rush days stuff),
East Saramento (East of Sacramento river),
South Sacramento (A ways south of highway 50),
Sacramento (general) is:
West Sacramento (West of Sacramento River) is it's own town.
Made up of many smaller communities;
Carmichal, Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova,
Del Paso Heights, North Highlands, ...
Farther out there's;
Rocklin, Roseville, Elverta, Galt, Elk Grove, Folsom, Orangevale,...
(All are within 45 minutes of downtown Sacramento)
Farter-Farther out theres;
Auburn, Placerville, Grizly Flats, ...
(There in the Sierras, DECies live there,
Commutes are about 1-1.5 hours)
Sacramento (proper and general):
DEC, Intel, NEC, HP, IBM, we're all here somewhere
Housing is very close to Folsom prices
The economy is down
Unemployment is the highest in the State ( > 8%)
Intel and HP were hiring, don't know now. Intel has recently expanded.
NEC's plant build PC's and printers. HP's has all functions, (H/W, S/W, ...)
IBM is Sales and Support (Just as is DEC's)
Sacramento DEC has been downsized, times are tough everywhere.
Regards,
JDH
P.S. Most people I talk to want to leave California for a more peaceful
and less stressful way of life, my wife and I included. (Idaho or
Montana look pretty good.)

Hello from Montana! It's a great place to live and we love it here.
FWIW, DEC's presence:
3 Sales People (I'm one of those)
2 Logistics Persons
7 Service Engineers
1 Service Secretary
These people are in the following locations:
7 Billings
2 Bozeman
2 Missoula
1 Helena
1 Great Falls
In addition, we have Service Engineers in Casper, Wyoming and Rapid
City, South Dakota that are part of this same group.
We recently shrunk by one, when the local Digital Services Unit Manager
took a new job with DEC in Seattle. Sales and Service are now both
managed out of Salt Lake City, Utah.
