96.2 | Responsibility built Digital | NOVA::BERENSON | Hal Berenson | Thu Mar 27 1986 08:57 | 8 |
| KO loves to talk about the early days, when the officers of the company
did everything including pushing the broom to clean the office. Unlike
many top execs, KO doesn't seem much corrupted by his position or his
wealth. I think he still feels personally responsible for absolutely
every little act committed in Digital's name. I suspect that if he
felt that pushing a broom through the Mill was the most important
contribution he could make to Digital at the moment, you'd spot
him behind one....

96.3 | Another cleanup the mill story | REX::MINOW | Martin Minow, DECtalk Engineering | Sat Mar 29 1986 08:26 | 13 |
| One of the people I used to vanpool with related the following story:
His van occasionally stopped at the Maynard McDonalds for breakfast.
When my friend went in, he saw Ken eating his breakfast and asked
if he could join him. Ken said, "yes, but don't talk about work".
They had a pleasant breakfast and chat and walked together back to
the Mill. As they entered the parking lot, Ken said it was really
messy and started going around picking up scraps of paper. My friend,
of course, stayed to help.

96.4 | It IS the fourth Commandment | ODIXIE::VICKERS | Don | Mon Mar 31 1986 00:07 | 22 |
| It is responsibility that is truely one of the major strengths of
Digital. It's the fourth commandment on the corporate philosophies
and SHOULD always be followed.
Responsibility is one of those little things that may seem very
minor but add up in a hurry. The antedote in .3 by Martin is a
great example of responsibilty and good citizenship.
Digital espouses freedom at the utmost. The more freedom there
is the more responsibility the members of the organization SHOULD
bring to bear. Those who want the freedom WITHOUT the responsibilty
will destroy the freedom.
Think about why the Diner's Club program has been 'given' to us.
A very large part of the reason is that a significant part of US
did not file expense reports on a timely basis and misused the Air
Travel card. The result of the lack responsibility by some has
been the loss of freedom by MANY.
Let's all be as responsible as we can be,
Don

96.5 | Nobody Lacks Responsibility | DSSDEV::SAUTER | John Sauter | Mon Mar 31 1986 09:06 | 12 |
| I once heard KO say (approximately): When something goes wrong,
nobody completely lacks responsibility for it. When I read about
his apology to the stockholders for TRAX I became sure that he
feels that way. The anecdote in .3 is another example. If you
think about it, .4 is also an example: those who were aware of
the problem should have acted to correct it in their peers. Their
privilege was revoked because they didn't.
This is a hard standard to live up to. People who meddle in other
people's business because they think something is going wrong are
not the most popular people, especially when they are right.
