80.0. "I sell first, I check later.." by PRSIS3::DTL () Thu Jan 23 1986 02:27

In the VMSNOTES file on VAXWRK, a guy complained about a V4.2 or so,
which was used to clusterize a 780 and a 8600 (more or less, no matter)
at a customer site.

The guy said "we need 4.2A to have this working... the systems are already
installed ans don't work (obviously!). please post or send me AT ONCE the
patch or the kit to fix my problem"

My comment is:

This behaviour is NOT PROFESSIONAL and the person responsible for letting
such configuration installed at a customer site WITHOUT checking the
required software is irresponsible (I don't know who it is and I don't care)

We have seen many of these errors done by salesmen who tell their customers
anything to make the sale, and 'move heaven and earth' to fix the problems
THEY have caused.

When will we start working as adults in this company?

Such comments as .0 are, in themselves, unprofessional.

why?

...because generalizations based on anecdote and judgmental criticism
based on only a few facts tend to be neither convincing nor productive.

fuel for .0's fire, then:
case 1:

salesperson sold customer a number of tape units with the promise that
certain company proprietary documents would be made available to that
customer so they could write their own drivers.

case 2.

salesperson sold customer a number of system, promising them that the
new devices sold with the system were supported on a previous version
of the operating system (which they were NOT).

The above two are cases that I have been involved in directly; they are not
rumors or heresay. I also do not believe that .0 was unprofessional in any-
thing that was said.

Ahh Gi'day...

Happens quite a bit! Try doing installations for awhile!!

I think it is caused mainly by ignorance rather than intention, a cry
for a more technical salesforce and better technical liason. I think
this is improving, only time will tell.
