56.0. "Pay freeze redux (DIS style)" by DONJON::GOLDSTEIN () Fri Sep 20 1985 14:07

Lessee, after the last major Pay Freeze there was some grumbling that
Senior Management had decided that it was a bad idea, and they wouldn't
do it again.

Last spring, when things began to tighten up, we in DIS were informed
that there would be a 2-3 month delay in reviews, but we would get our
reviews and they would be retroactive. The delay was done to set up
a new pay plan, lower (2-4%) than the previousl one. Reviews were held
simply to give them time to redo the plan.

As it now stands in DIS, employees' reviews are being made effective
six months after their original date, WITHOUT retro checks. In other
words, a six month pay freeze.  This hasn't been an announced policy;
I just tried to trace my missing review and that's where it went. Is
this being done elsewhere in the company, or is DIS being particularly
onerous? Does this constitute a breach of some sort of oral contract
since we were told our raises would be retroed?

Just wondering...

I've worked at DIGITAL for 7 months now. My first pay review will come
at 15 months. The reason is a bit complex, having to do with opportunity
for promotion. I could have held out for a 12 month review but that would
have been to my financial disadvantage. As for others in my group, there
seems to be no standard approach. Only the problem is universal - everybody
cut back on the salary plan, and then once again.

Several people in my group missed their usual raise date because of the
re-doing of salary plans. When the raises came through they *were* retroactive.

I think you are getting the messy end of the stick. Not an unusual thing
for DIS.

I believe there is a corporate wide policy in plact to lengthen the time
between reviews. The average is now supposed to be 13 months (AVERAGE -
corporate wide).

This is distinctly different from the delay in reviews due to the admin
system (although I must admit, there is some overlap is a few reviews
due to timing)

BUT does appear that six month delays are a little radical.
