34.0. "My own philosophy.." by EVE::G_DAVIS () Sat May 18 1985 21:41

Hey, this stuff is great! I'm in a software unit that has
people dropping out like lemmings going over a cliff. I've been
with DEC a little over 5 years, and constantly have people
coming over asking about ODP, what they should do....etc.

The style of counseling I give depends on whom I am addressing.
This is exactly the way I feel about the ODP. It is a policy.
It is basically good. It CAN solve problems in a constructive way.
And...heaven help us if it didn't exist. (shudder...goosebumps).

But! We work in a company that has one big problem (as the rest
of the world does)... it is run by humans. They all look, walk, act,
think, and administer differently. ODP is great if the manager
believes in, and administers it properly. If not, then I agree with
the notes that say 'get out',, time to leave etc.

It's interesting to hear you swiss folks say 'that's the way Americans
do it...doesn't work here....' etc. I could say the same thing, but
reverse the sides of the 'pond' in the sentence. My point is, it all
depends on the PERSON you are dealing with. I've seen both types,
and survived the worst (I became a non-person).

Just step lightly and carry a mine detector.

My next novel will be about 'Bad Press..'
