17.0. "DIGITAL? The watches?" by GVASA::CASELLINI () Tue Mar 05 1985 15:56
Ok..I know..this note could have been posted on MARKETING, as well as on
funny customer phone calls...but let's discuss this issue here, as it is
another big problem within DIGITAL.
I am trying to reach a customer:
"Business and Word ltd. Hello?"
"Hello. It is Casellini at the phone, from DIGITAL Equipement Corporation,
I am calling fo ..."
"Ah, I see, you are calling for the new clock.. Hold on please..I will put
you trough Mister who_ordered_the_new_clock"
...
Beside the fact, that they have 3 VAX in their business (The person answering
at the phone was certainely new), why doesn't anybody know what Digital is?
To often, I feel stupid, to explain to somebody who asked me where I was
working, that DIGITAL is *NOT* a watch manufacturer...
Can we, (we = not_working_for_the_marketing) do anything against this?
I wrote this note, not to try to improve the DIGITAL image for the exteriour,
I wrote it, to improve DIGITAL's image, for us, who are working in it.

| I'm afraid this issue has been discussed a long time in the Marketing notesfile,
as you suggested, Norbert. Could you check with Patrick (NY1MM::) Sweeney in
which note and post your root note there, after having read the *whole*
discussion, of course?
Thanks,

| Didier is correct. Note #32 in HUMAN""::SYS$NOTES:MARKETING.NOT discusses
"DEC or Digital"; that dicussion brought up the inevitable comparison to
watches.
The corporate name is relevant only to the extent that it readily indentifies
the company to its potential customers, either by the meaning of the
words explicitly, or by common association, its "image".
If you're disappointed in the marketing of Digital Equipment Corporation,
we invite your comments in the above notes file.

| I hope this file will have as much participation as Marketing.not I asked for
when I was the Base Products Marketing software specialist here in Paris.
