420.0. "Need a 'problem <> solution' search tool" by KETJE::VANDEVYVER () Mon Jul 06 1992 15:33

Hi,

An important (aren't they all) customer (VOLVO CAR BELGIUM) is looking for a
tool to support 24hour operations.

24hour operations (by computer operators and help-desk) means 3 x 8h shifts.
The problem is communications between shifts. Specially about the solutions
found for a specific problem.

The range of problems is very broad : from hardware failure (why does this
terminal not work) to application problems ( I hit this key and the machine says
Ping).

Volvo would try to build a 'database' of problems/solutions.
Being keen on using expert-systems, they are looking in that direction.

They thought of using Vax Decision Expert to solve their problem :
the operators could build small problem/solution modules,
which can be integrated in an overall tree structure.

Part of the problem could be solved in a traditional way (mail, notes, ...)
but the advantages of using VDE are
	- an operator can handle the maintanance of the KB
	- research of a problem/solution is 'guided' by question/ansers
	- in some cases a simple call-out can be written to get a status from
the system, instead of asking the operator for it.

Volvo asked me for an opinion.
Imho VDE can not handle a large volume of problems very well, and is vey poor
when it comes to documentation.
On top of that, VDE seems to be disappearing.

But are there alternatives?

I know we (dec) have a problem/solution system in use @AYR. Is that system
customisable and transportabl to this customer?

Any hint/remark very much appreciated.

Luc,
I understand that the DECtree internal product is now being bundled as
part of a service offering by our partner (DKAS) in the AITC. It could offer
you one possible solution.

Another possibility which is closer to home is the TIMA application
which provides a Problems/Solutions database and query facility.

Maybe one, or some combination of the two, can help your customer.

Joe.

re .1

sounds good Joe!

Could you be a little bit more specific about both solutions

1) what do you mean by DECtree is bundled (DKAS/AITC)
what is DKAS? (any relation with Imka?)
   could DECtree be 'unbundled'

2) can you give me a pointer to the TIMA application
(is the notesfile 'TIMA for US-users' relevant for us EC-members?)

	Luc,
I see you already have a question on DECtree in the (DECCtree) conf. so
I will be interested to see the answer. Given todays situation most things
can be sold as part of a Consultancy service, just need to ask the question in
the right fashion.

For TIMA I suggest you contact Pascal Bodin (DTN 828-5144) @VBE. I will
warn him to expect a call.

Joe.
