DIGITAL EQUIPMENT ANNOUNCES DEC OPS5 V4.0

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- January 22, 1992 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
announced today that it is now accepting orders for the new version of
DEC OPS5 for VAX/VMS, DEC OSF/1 and RISC/ULTRIX platforms. Shipments
are expected to begin in May. DEC OPS5 V4.0 provides support for new
platforms, enhances the power and flexibility of the OPS5 language,
and eases integration of OPS5 code into bigger applications.
DEC OPS5, the industry leading expert system development tool,
has found wide acceptance in a broad range of applications and
industries where rule progamming enabled the development of
applications difficult or impossible to create or support with
traditional programming techniques. Major successes have included:
computer configuration, scheduling, power-grid monitoring, fraud
detection, and financial services advisors.
"Digital has been involved in expert systems for over a decade,
and this experience has enabled us to develop tools that are useful
for solving real-world problems in a production environment," said
Will Anderson, Manager of Digital's Expert System Technology Group.
"DEC OPS5's ease of use, high-performance, reliability and scalability
have been the cornerstone of our success. These, support for DEC
OSF/1 and RISC/ULTRIX, combined with the powerful new features found
in Version 4.0, should make rule programming accessible to the
mainstream of MIS and software engineering."

Highlights of the major new features of DEC OPS5 Version 4.0 include:

o Compiler support for DEC OSF/1 and RISC/ULTRIX platforms as
        well as VAX/VMS

o Support for an "object-oriented" type data model with object-
class declarations, including single inheritance of attributes
        between classes

o Greatly enhanced integration capability through improved call
interfaces which provide automatic argument type conversion
and new NAS compliant, more powerful, run-time library

o Enhanced language expressiveness including disjunction of
condition elements and support for multiple compound
        attributes per object.

o Built-in SQL interface for easy access to VAX Rdb/VMS
        relational databases

     o DECwindows MOTIF-based development environment for VAX/VMS

"These new features make DEC OPS5 even easier to use and to
integrate into applications developed with traditional technologies,"
according to Andrew Ostrom, Digital Expert Systems Technologies
Product manager. "Support for DEC OSF/1 and RISC/ULTRIX as well as
VMS further demonstrates Digital's commitment to open systems. We
believe that DEC OPS5 can truly provide the "Open Advantage" that
systems developers need in today's complex, fast changing business
environment."
DEC OPS5 V4.0 is orderable now, and will ship in volume in May,
1992. Pricing for the compiler-only package starts at $1,225 for a
single-user "personal use" license for any of the supported platforms.
A single-user personal use license for the DEC OPS5 Development
Environment for VMS V4.0 starts at $1,740. Capacity based and
cluster-wide licenses are also available.

DEC OPS5 V4.0 is the culmination of more than ten years of
Digital experience in building rule progamming applications and tools.
DEC OPS5 V4.0 is backed by Digital's comprehensive range of training,
consulting, and product support services. An extensive portfolio of
services are available for every stage of project development --
including management consulting on the impact of expert systems
technology, project identification, prototyping, implementation, and
product training.
