I am looking for applications of Knowledge-Based system in the area of
Networking. I have some customers from the telecommunication area who
is looking at the possibility of deploying AI in network dignositics
and also real time cellular phone area frequency assignment. Any help
and pointers in any area will be appreciated.

SUCCESS WITH DIGITAL AI: SEL ALCATEL
	        ====================================

For telephone companies, efficient use of the network is the key to success.
Routing tables, stored in network switches help control the flow of call
traffic and play an important role in helping phone companies achieve
efficient use of the network. As such, proper configuration of these routing
tables is critical for maximizing revenues, increasing return on investment,
and improving customer satisfaction.

Alcatel NV of Paris supplies telecommunications equipment to phone
companies around the globe, and with 1988 revenues exceeding 12 billion
dollars Alcatel is the world's second largest producer of telecommunications
equipment. Alcatel is well known for its switches, which are used by
telephone companies to process telephone calls. The routing tables in the
switches and the tools that allow the phone companies to manage them are an
important part of Alcatel's switch products.

If the routing tables in the switches supplied by companies such as
Alcatel are not configured properly, certain links in the network may be
loaded to over 100% of their capacity, while others would be significantly
underutilized. When a link is loaded to over 100% of capacity, calls in
excess of 100% cannot be completed. This leads to loss of phone company
toll revenue and dissatisfied customers. At the same time links which are
underutilized are falling short of their revenue producing potential.

Although telephone network equipment is exceptionally reliable, there
are occasional failures. In the event of a failure, the call routing
table allows calls to be completed by routing them around the problem
area in the network. In these situations the telephone company stands to
lose significant business if the routing tables are not configured properly.

Configuration of routing tables is an important yet complicated task.
Configuring routing tables in the conventional manner, by hand, is slow.
Traditionally, skilled personnel, who might otherwise be engaged in
more valuable tasks, spend significant amounts of time reconfiguring
routing tables to accommodate changes in usage patterns as well as
changes in network equipment.

The large amount of effort required to reconfigure switch routing tables
means not only that talented personnel devote a great deal of time to
the task, but also that reconfiguration could not be performed on a frequent
or timely basis. As a result, the network was relatively inflexible and
the routing table configurations that were ultimately deployed were a
compromise between many different solutions.

An area of artificial intelligence called expert systems is well suited to
addressing complex problems such as routing table configuration. In
addition to handling complexity, expert systems provide flexibility. For
example, an expert system solution to routing table configuration would be
more suited than conventional approaches to adaptation for use on a variety
of networks and in a variety of environments.

Through Digital Equipment Corporation's six month technology transfer
program called "Business Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence", Alcatel's
Standard Elektrik Lorenz (SEL) subsidiary developed a prototype called
Alternate Routing Expert System (ARX). ARX proved the appropriateness
of the expert systems approach for the routing table problem. Earlier
attempts to automate the task using conventional tools such as C language
resulted in systems that did not yield the flexibility in the network that
was the goal of SEL Alcatel.

Having shown the value of the expert systems approach, SEL Alcatel has
identified applications for ARX in a number of areas. Customer applications
engineering is responsible for insuring that Alcatel's switches meet the
specific needs of its customers. In this area ARX automatically generates call
routing tables to be stored in the switches before Alcatel delivers them as
part of telephone exchanges.

ARX assists Alcatel's network planning engineers by performing simulations
that are necessary to validate network designs. Future extensions to
ARX capabilities in network planning function will include an interactive
graphical user interface, design performance prediction, and network design
advice.

Early in 1990 SEL Alcatel plans to put ARX to use in the operations and
maintenance centers (OMCs), from which telephone companies monitor and
control large portions of the network. As part of its initial introduction
into the OMC, ARX will provide the staff with predictions as to the
performance of the current and planned configurations, advise for physical
network capacity increases, and suggestions for routing table modifications
along with explanations. ARX will be provided direct access to the computer
data base containing call traffic information. Complete integration with the
call traffic information data base will allow ARX to produce the most
effective configurations. ARX will also be integrated with a separate
software module to provide a user interface consistent with the other systems
which are used by the OMC staff. The user interface will make it easier for
the OMC staff to provide ARX with general routing strategies and monitor ARX
activity. In the last phase of implementing ARX in the OMC, configurations
developed by ARX will be loaded directly into the switches that process
telephone calls.

In much the same way that SEL Alcatel is committed to meeting its customer's
needs through advanced approaches such as the use of expert systems,
Digital Equipment Corporation is committed to providing SEL Alcatel with
the tools it needs to keep its products recognized as some of the best in
the world. ARX has been developed using a Digital expert system programming
language called VAX OPS5 and has been delivered on Digital VAX computers.
The integration of ARX to other modules in the OMC is being achieved
using Digital's VAX C programming language and by taking advantage of
Digital's VAX architecture. The consistent reliability and integratability
of Digital's products and services have been important factors in the
success of ARX and other projects for which SEL Alcatel employs Digital
products and services. Digital's quality products and services will allow
ARX to continue to evolve to meet the needs of SEL Alcatel, and the needs
of their customers.

    Project: RLS-4000 Configurator
Purpose: Assist the Proposal and Application Engineers in configuring
switches in the DCO-E product line.
Reason: Assist the Engineers in generating complete and accurate
configurations in an efficient and consistent manner. Provide
a tool that can properly translate customer requirements into
current manufacturable configurations without requiring the
user to have a full understanding of the product domain (part
            numbers and their relationship).
    Tools/Languages: OPS5, Mercury

Project: 800 Number Advisory Assistant
Purpose: Help Desk And Field Personnel Assistance Advisory System for offering
recommendations on the installation, auditting, and maintenance of
800 numbers (toll-free calling long distance).
Reason For Developing: Need to increase consistent application of
expertise among relatively untrained help desk
personnel, reduce error rate, ameliorate accuracy
of diagnosis, improve customer satisfaction, eleviate
burden of phone call volume on help desk personnel,
eventually allow field personnel to use system without
Tool: Nexpert calling help desk.

Project: E911 Error Message Advisory System
Purpose: Interpret the error codes generated from the current E911 system,
classify the codes by importance, and generate instructions to the
system operators as to what to do to solve the problem (if the error
code indicates a problem). Like a help desk for system operators.
Long term goal to network the Expert System to the E911 system for
         "real time" monitoring.
Reason: Improve operator efficiency in handling error codes (learning curve,
time service, fewer reboots...) and lessen the reliance on the system
"expert", who is on call 24 hours.
Tools: Nexpert (also duplicated in OPS)

Project: Data analysis for private telephone network configuration.
Purpose: Private telephone networks are often configured for
corporate clients. The configuration is based on analysis of
calling patterns as reflected by "call detail records." The
reports generated from the call detail records are frequently
suspect due to incomplete, incorrect, or inconsistent input
data. Several people devoted a great deal of time
in order to ensure that the reports generated from the call
detail records make sense. Several knowledge based programs
were developed to automate this "validation process."
Reason: Speed up the configuration process while providing for more
complete and consistent analysis of input data.
Tools: OPS

Project: Diagnosis of PBX equipment during manufacturing process
Purpose: Expert system will guide final troubleshooting exam of
PBX equipment before it is released to customer. First diagnoses modules
then the actions between them. Verifies functionality of, for example,
subscriber frequencies and digital subscriber interfaces.
Reason: Lack of experience in company with diagnosing new PBXs.
Tools: Nexpert, UDS
