372.0. "FINANCE - Financial Data Navigator" by CHEVIE::FITZGIBBON (Joe Fitzgibbon, Valbonne EIC) Mon Sep 30 1991 13:52

Cost Centre Spending Is Easily Analysed
                           With Financial Data Navigator

                                  by Nancy Wogrin

The Financial Data Navigator will go live in its first site at the
end of September. The Financial Data Navigator application
provides an environment for a financial analyst or a cost centre
manager to analyse, explore and report on cost centre spending
data. It was codeveloped by the the European AITC and the Finance
         IM&T group in Ayr, Scotland.

What makes Navigator different than other data reporting systems
is its use of expert system technology to summarize the data, and
the windowing technology to express relationships. The expert
system uses a financial analyst's knowledge to highlight the
important aspects of the data. The window and mouse-driven
interface provides for an easy connection between the textual
report and the data that supports it.

Corporate financial data comes from many sources and is
accumulated into many levels of detail, all of which should be
consistent and accurate. The job of tracking the accuracy of
corporate accounts and determining corporate spending is
complicated by the amount of data and the number of sources from
         which it originates.

The user is presented with a textual report, a map of the
accounts, and all the supporting tables of data -- all connected
through mouse clicks. Drill-down on the data is done completely
by the mouse; the user doesn't have to touch the keyboard or learn
any special syntax. The application rests on a database that
brings together in one place the essentials of all levels of cost
centre spending, from the lowest levels of transactions to general
ledger rollups. This database is updated automatically as the
         general ledger is updated.
                                        ###
