357.0. "References E.S. in banking" by KETJE::VANDEVYVER (I've been in the desert on a node with no name...) Wed Aug 07 1991 15:12

One of the larger Belgian banks is looking at the possibilities of
Experts Systems for their business.

We have to make a proposal for a development environment (CASE) and I'd like to
include Digitals products, services and references for expert systems.

If you know any AI/ES references we may talk about (or just refer to) please
reply.

Thanks.

Luc

P.s. I checked the 'Project Tracking System' but I cannot get access

DEC-Japan has developed some expert systems for banks, such as SUMITOMO,
MITSUBISHI.

	APPLICATION: TELEX RECOGNITION SYSTEM
	CUSTOMER: SUMITOMO BANK
	S/W: VAX OPS5, VAX LISP, VAX C, VAX/SCAN
	H/W: VAX8530
DEVELOPMENT TERM:	FROM MAR-1986 TO JUL-1987

Telex from foreign country is often misspelt, for examples SUMITOM
BANK, SUMITOMO. This ES recognized ambiguous telex using expert's
	knowledge. System's recognition rate was about 70% - 90%.

CLASS is an expert system written at the State University of New York for a
large New York bank. It was written in GEN-X, the shell that VAX Decision
Expert is based on. It helps make commercial lending decisions.

Mark Turner worked on a system for Barclays that helped spot fraud in cases
where information from one side of the bank isn't supposed to be passed to
another side. Such as from the folks who finance corporate takeovers to the
folks who do personal investment consulting. When I've heard this system
being discussed in front of customers, Barclays was referred to as "a large
bank in Britain".

Ruedi Burkhard worked on an expert system for Union Bank of Switzerland, but
I can't remember what it was about. Ruedi is on his way to Galway today.
You might try sending him mail, or perhaps Caroline could help.

Also, there are all the insurance company applications, which the bank would
be interested in, as they are both into each others businesses these days.
At Aetna there was the underwriting assistant and the contract configuration
system.

Finally, there's a page in the Digital Solutions Reference Book for Expert
Systems that mentions a few financial applications, although not in much
detail. For example, it mentions fraud detection, loan analysis, loan
portfolio design, insurance application screening, and a few more. If you
don't have this document, I could fax you the appropriate page if you wish.

Digital Italy has developed 2 expert systems for one of the most
important Italian Banks (Cassa Risparmio Torino).

The first one that's been totally ended and that's actually routinely
used by the bank concerns a system of Credit Analisys.

The second one who's been set up by the large satisfaction of the first
expert system, is actually in development and concerns an "electronic"
expert helping the bank customer in choosing the best form of
    investment for the own savings.

If you need more detailed information, please contact Luciano Quaglia
@TNO (DTN 871-7944) who's developed these expert systems
