ADVANCED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
29-30 OCTOBER, 1991
Target Audience
The ideal candidate is a business or IT manager in an influential or
decision-making role who needs to understand the new technology
opportunities which are available today, and how they can be applied
to help solve business problems or to help deliver new business
solutions.
Description
The objective of this seminar is to help you understand some of the
new information technologies which are beginning to be deployed in
industry today, and how to identify and position the potential
benefits which can be gained for your business. Significant advances
are taking place in information technology making it possible now to
consider and deliver business solutions which were not feasible in
the recent past: innovative developments in computer science are now
on the market in terms of new hardware and software; open standards
promote a wider view and access to information; fast networks and
compression techniques permit the sharing of information not feasible
on large scale before.
Digital will share with you the latest service and product offerings
in the field of 'Advanced Information Technologies'. The seminar will
be practical and based on products and services available today;
focus will be placed not only on the discrete technologies
themselves, but also on their application in industry today. When you
leave this seminar, you should be clear on what is possible today,
what you can expect in the future and how Digital can support you.
Areas to be covered will include:
- Multimedia technologies and applications
- Voice technology and applications
- Intelligent tutoring systems
- Intelligent information management
- Automated forms processing/intelligent character
recognition
- Compound/Open Document Architecture
- Hypertext, videotext
** This is a preliminary list of topics, subject to change **

ADVANCED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES Seminar / October 29th & 30th, 1991
SEMINAR LOCATION
The Executive Customer Centre (ECC-E), Sophia Antipolis - Valbonne.
ENROLMENT PROCESS
If you have a Customer Event Coordinator in your country, please
ensure they are involved in the process.
Enrolment is by invitation only, and is subject to qualification. If
you have a customer who is interested in attending the Seminar,
please complete the attached Questionnaire and return it to Genevieve
Caillet @VBO via your country coordinator by AUGUST 16TH, 1991. The
qualifying is not done on a "first come, first served basis" to give
everyone the opportunity to apply, but a first review of the requests
will take place on 16th AUGUST 1991, to enable selected customers to
receive their invitation in due time. Requests will still be
considered after this deadline subject to the number of slots
remaining.
If the number of qualified requests is sufficient to fill the
available slots, any further qualified nominations will be put on the
waiting list. Qualification is given ONLY for the customer shown on
your Questionnaire; in the case of cancellation the slot will be
given to a qualified customer on the waiting list. Any proposed
substitution must be re-qualified by us before being accepted.
Only send your enrolment form once you have discussed the matter with
your customer and have had their definite approval and get them to
pencil in the date in their diary.
Registration packages will be sent out directly after qualification.
NOTES:
1. The Seminar language is English, so please be sure that your
customer has a sufficient level in English.
2. There is a limit of 55 places available, for which customers
have first priority; the number of Digital escorts, therefore,
is limited to one for every two customers, on average. If the
number of escorts from any country exceeds this level, we will
refer the matter to the country, since we have no basis for
any decision on escort selection.
3. The Seminar, documentation, breaks, lunches, and local
transportation to and from the ECC-E, are free of charge to
the customer, but all other travel and accommodation costs are
at the customer's expense. We will make hotel reservations and
local transportation arrangements for all participants.
4. The "PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT", on the previous page of this
package, is specifically designed to be given to the customer,
as a summary of the seminar's content and objectives. However
the rest of the Announcement and the Questionnaire are for
Digital internal use only, and should NOT be given to the
customer.
5. Participants should plan to arrive at the hotel on the evening
of Monday October 28th, ready to start the Seminar at 09.00 on
Tuesday October 29th. The Seminar will end at about 17:00 on
Wednesday October 30th.
ADVANCED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
29-30 OCTOBER, 1991
PRELIMINARY AGENDA
HOST : Steve Jones (Cross-Industries EIC)
The seminar will be a balance between presentations of Digital's
offerings and demonstrations of their practical use; we will explain
Digital's existing and new hardware, software and service offerings
in the areas of multimedia, including planned product announcements
of DECaudio and DECvideo. Throughout the seminar, particular stress
will be placed on Digital's networked/open advantage and how this is
specifically relevant for the topics discussed. One day will be
dedicated to multimedia/voice, with remaining topics taking the next
day.
AGENDA OUTLINE
1. Introduction
2. Multimedia technologies and applications
From a technology perspective multimedia is the extension of audio
and video to the graphical revolution of the '80s; this logical
progression is beginning to be realised in industrial applications
thanks to recent advances in computing technologies (e.g. compression
techniques, standards, client/server techniques). Banking, insurance,
medical, tutoring, publishing...are just a few of the industries where
multimedia will play a vital part in their application developments
of tomorrow; almost any large enterprise will have a need to manage
various media in digital form, and to have these media integrated
into their business applications. At last year's DECville, DIDDLY
was a good example of a multimedia application attracting a lot of
customer interest; based on this we are now starting to deliver
multimedia customer solutions.
3. Voice technology and applications
Communication is essential to people and business; it is widely
believed that 80% of human cummunications occur in the form of voice.
However, in most instances this information is not utilised
effectively. If captured, managed and reproduced in context, this
information can become a strategic asset. Voice processing enables new
solutions to old business problems: communication with mobile
individuals and distributed groups; effective capture and distribution
of information; voice-driven (hands-free) applications. The
integration of voice information with existing solutions adds value
and extends their life.
4. Intelligent tutoring systems
Tutoring systems is probably one of the areas where multimedia
is being applied most widely; the ability to include voice, images
and video vastly improves the effectiveness of computer-based
training.
Combine this with advances in machine learning techniques and we
can now begin to realise the true benefits of economic and effective
tutoring packages.
5. Intelligent information management
The problem of maintaining and allowing easy access to vast amounts
of multimedia data is one being faced today by many enterprises.
Solutions to this problem require the integration of a number of
technologies including imaging, neural networks, content-based
retrieval, optical storage, hypertext, videotext and more.
6. Automated forms processing/intelligent character recognition
Intelligent character recognition (ICR) enables the recognition and
conversion of handwritten information into ASCII text; the images
containing the handritten text can be scanned documents or existing
images. ICR applications are frequently found in automated
forms processing where a solution is required for a customer
processing large amounts of handwritten documents (e.g. claims forms,
credit card receipts); ICR can also be used as an adjunct to
conventional OCR to reduce the error/reject level associated with the
latter.
