DIGITAL EQUIPMENT TO MARKET MASPAR SYSTEMS
WORLDWIDE, MAKES MINORITY INVESTMENT,
AS ENTRY INTO MASSIVELY PARALLEL COMPUTER MARKET
MAYNARD, Mass. -- April 16, 1991 -- Digital Equipment Corporation announced
today it was entering the emerging and important market for massively
parallel computer systems.
Digital and MasPar Computer Corporation of Sunnyvale California said that
they have entered into a strategic agreement under which Digital would
market MasPar computers worldwide and would also make a minority investment
in MasPar. In addition, licensing fees would be paid to Digital for some of
its patented technology used in the MasPar computers.
Financial details were not disclosed.
Digital also said that it had established a new business unit which would
collaborate with MasPar and other companies in the development of software
tools and applications including key software packages from third party
suppliers. Digital will acquire licenses from MasPar for its unique
programming environment software. This group would also work to establish
standards to allow application software to run on multiple platforms.
Digital said it would make definitive product announcements regarding MasPar
systems later this Spring. With this strategic partnership, Digital
becomes the first broad line computer supplier to formally enter the market
for massively parallel computers.
Commenting on the announcement, Digital President Kenneth H. Olsen said that
"for more than a decade, Digital has contributed a great deal to the
thinking and has developed fundamental patented technology behind parallel
computing. It has also had leadership products like VAXclusters. Today's
massive parallelism takes advantage of semiconductor technology and software
to solve important problems in a very elegant way. It fits our high
performance computing strategy very well, and is an important addition to
Digital's open computing environment."
"We see this relationship as being very important and one which will help us
to accomplish our goal of making massively parallel computing available to a
wide range of users", said Jeff Kalb, MasPar president. "Digital and MasPar
have had a close relationship, and we expect that to grow significantly.
Although both companies are able to explore other partnerships, we look at
this relationship as having great strategic importance."
Massively parallel computers are usually defined as having 1,000 or more
processors. The MasPar MP-1 family of massively parallel computer systems
implements a programming model called 'data parallelism'. Data is spread
across a large number of processors and operated on simultaneously allowing
very high data throughput. In contrast, conventional computers operate on
data elements serially, one at a time.
Massively parallel computers that implement data parallelism are ideally
suited for applications such as image processing and understanding, text
search and retrieval, database queries, document recognition and seismic
data processing. Other important applications include neural networks,
econometric modeling and financial analysis, robotics and machine vision,
ray tracing, and finite element and crash analysis.
MasPar introduced its MP-1 family in January, 1990. Systems range from 1,024
to 16,384 processors and offer performance up to 26,000 million instructions
per second (MIPS) and 1,300 million floating point operations per second
(MFLOPS). MasPar's goal has been to make very high performance computers
widely available by making them affordable, readily programmable, and
supported by a large base of software. MasPar has emphasized software,
progammability and standards since its inception.
The MP-1 system software includes a set of advanced, window based integrated
tools that allows programmers to readily develop software that exploits the
power of massively parallel architecture.
DIGITAL SETS BUSINESS UNIT TO ACCELERATE SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY
The Massively Parallel Systems Group, under the direction of Charles Wilson,
has been created by Digital with responsibility for leading software
development, marketing and sales support. The new group, part of Corporate
Research, will create development tools and applications software and market
complete affordable solutions around available MasPar systems.
Research Vice President, Dr. Samuel H. Fuller noted that the relatively
small market size and technical knowledge required for success suggested a
non-traditional approach to the business. "The innovative environment of
our research group supported by the business infrastructure of the
corporation is an ideal way to nurture this opportunity. Our goal is to
establish Digital early in this market and to stimulate its expansion by
developing significant new ways to solve customer problems through massively
parallel computing techniques."
Digital's recent work with massively parallel systems, includes the Data
Parallel Research Initiative, a program which encourages research and
software development in parallel computing through equipment grants and
technical assistance. Mr. Wilson has directed this program since its
inception in 1988 and it now includes many of the leading suppliers of
hardware and software, including MasPar.
MasPar Computer Corporation, founded in March 1988, manufacturers, markets,
services and supports, affordable, high performance, massively parallel
computer systems and associated software development tools. These systems
speed up the solution of data- and compute-intensive problems by orders of
magnitude at dramatic price/performance improvements over existing computer
architectures. MasPar is a privately held company.
***DIGITAL CONFIDENTIAL***
DIGITAL'S ENTRY INTO THE
MASSIVELY PARALLEL PROCESSOR MARKET
MESSAGES AND Q&A
DEVELOPED FOR USE BY DIGITAL PUBLIC RELATIONS
ON DIGITAL ENTRY INTO THIS MARKET
Key Messages:
o Digital is the first main line computer company to formally enter the
market for massively parallel computing systems.
o We have been involved with this this technology for many years. Digital,
through its internal and external research efforts and engineering
programs has lead much of the thinking behind parallel architectures and
we have had leading products like VAXclusters.
o Advances is semiconductor technology and software are making possible
significant advances in massive parallelism. Digital has an opportunity
and key role to play.
o We believe there is excellent potential to make a major contribution in
this area in terms of solving customer problems and to be a leading
participant as the market the expands.
ON THE BUSINESS AGREEMENTS WITH MASPAR
Key Messages:
o Digital is making a minority investment in MasPar and entering into a
worldwide reseller agreement with them because their products and
technology are the most appropriate complement to our strategy.
o We have no intention of acquiring the company.
o MasPar has an excellent management and technical team.
o We have had a successful OEM agreement with MasPar in Australia and have
worked with them in our Data Parallel Research Initiative. We are also
a supplier to them of workstations and Jeff Kalb is a former Digital
Vice President. Our working relationship is excellent.
o We will continue to work with other massively parallel suppliers through
our DPRI and to work towards the establishment of software standards
for current platforms.
Q HOW MUCH OF AN INVESTMENT IS BEING MADE BY DIGITAL?
A The terms of the agreement are a confidential business matter between
Digital and MasPar. It is a minority financial interest. Digital will
not have a seat on MasPar's board.
Q WHAT IS THE BASIS OF THE TECHNOLOGY LICENSING AGREEMENT?
A A number of patents were granted to Digital engineers for work done on
massively parallel architecture particularly on data routing. The
licensing is a recognition of that work.
Q CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE OEM AGREEMENT?
A This is a long term agreement under which Digital will resell MasPar
systems. It is for worldwide distribution. It is non - exclusive. We
have had an OEM agreement with MasPar for distribution in Australia.
ON DIGITAL'S MASSIVELY PARALLEL PRODUCTS
Key Messages:
o We plan to make specific announcements on Digital's products later
this spring.
o They will be based on MasPar product line. This line is very familiar
for Digital in that it uses Digital workstations for program development
and as the system control console. We plan to add considerable
value in terms of sales, customer support and, of course, software.
o We will have pricing and other details at the time of the product
announcement.
o The massively parallel line will be integrated into Digital's computing
environment.
o We can give you no further details on products at this time.
o The massively parallel computing strategy is very complementary to
our VAX 9000, offering a different approach to solving certain kind of
compute-intensive problems.
DIGITAL SALES AND MARKETING
Key Messages
o Digital will train sales specialists to work with our account teams in
selling massively parallel products
o We are already working on a number of targeted opportunities
DIGITAL'S MASSIVELY PARALLEL SYSTEM GROUP
o The work of this business unit is to create development tools and
application software and to market complete affordable systems around
current available hardware platforms.
o This the first such group to be managed with Corporate Research.
o Charles Wilson is director of MPSG
Q HOW DOES THIS BUSINESS UNIT RELATE TO OTHERS IN THE COMPANY --
A This is a both development unit as well as an integration unit, in
that we are developing and integrating solutions software for existing
hardware for applicability across industries.
Q WHY IS THIS IN CORPORATE RESEARCH? WHY NOT PART OF YOUR
INFORMATION SYSTEMS GROUP (VAX 9000)?
A We are committed to successfully and profitably developing and marketing
massively parallel systems. We have the full resources of the
corporation at our disposal.
The market for massively parallel systems is small, today, relative to
other segments which Digital is pursuing. Success here also requires
highly specialized knowledge. The innovative environment and the
knowledge already within Corporate Research makes this an ideal
organization to nurture this new business.
We will work very closely with other groups which are dealing with
high performance products and applications. In fact, Bob Glorioso
and Harvey Weiss have been very much involved in developing and are very
supportive of the business plan.
MISCELLANEOUS
Q WILL YOU BE PARTICIPATING AT SUPERCOMPUTING USA (June)?
A Digital will have a major presence at Supercomputing USA. As you
know we offer vectors along with our mainframe / supercomputer class VAX
9000's. We will be doing cooperative demos with MasPar.
Q WHAT WILL BE STATUS OF THE DPRI (Data Parallel Research Initiative)?
Work of the DPRI in its current form will continue through the end of
this fiscal year. We are working no to define what form is appropriate
for the ongoing work.
Q HOW WILL THIS EFFORT HELP DIGITAL'S OVERALL BUSINESS PICTURE?
A As we've said, massively parallel is a relatively small market.
However, a sizable number of our current customers can use the
performance of massively parallel systems for solving certain problems.
Also, we expect to invest in programs to accelerate the availability of
applications software and to encourage people how to use massively
parallel systems. In the longer term sales of massively parallel
systems can pull in sales of other Digital products as well.
It is Digital's strategy to offer the broadest range of solutions.
