  Subject: DEC C++ Phase 1 Exit Announcement

Documents are now available for the Phase 1 exit for DEC C++ on the VMS and
ULTRIX platforms.

Closure will be accomplished ELECTRONICALLY. Any questions or comments about
the phase plans should be submitted to DECWET::COMPILERS by January 25th. The
SDT and OSG product teams will monitor this account and issues and concerns
will be addressed and published after the January 25th deadline.

  Relevant documents for review and comment are available from:

              TLE::cpp$:[cpp.public.phase1]filename.ps
              fungus:: /tmp/public/filename.ps
              xirtlu:: /public/cmplrs/filename.ps

  The documents that are available are:

	DEC C++ Business Plan (DEC_CPP_BUS_PLAN.PS)
	DEC C++ OSG Development Plan (DEC_CPP_OSG_DEVEL_PLAN.PS)
        DEC C++ Customer Services Plan (DEC_CPP_CSSE.PS)
	DEC C++ Master Documentation Plan (DEC_CPP_DOC_PLAN.PS)

        DEC C++ Class Library Requirement (DEC_CPP_CLASS_LIB_REQS.PS)

DEC C++ is a joint development effort between SDT and OSG. This project will
deliver a single language definition for ULTRIX RISC systems and VAX/VMS, one
set of class libraries, and platform-specific development environments.

A key differentiator of Digital's C++ product set is that we will provide a
compiler (versus a translator). Today, most vendors offer translators which
generate C programs from the C++ code. This product set also includes
a competitive development environment which supports the C++ language.

FRS of the ULTRIX RISC product is February 1992. FRS for the VAX/VMS product
is scheduled for May 1992.

Section 6 of the Business Plan, Financial Projections, will be provided
on request on an as needed basis.

*********************************************************************

          DEC C++ is a collaborative effort between the OSG Imple-
          mentation Languages Group and the SDT Technical Languages
          Group and is built around a common front-end, class library,
          and development environment technology. The DEC C++ com-
          piler and libraries will be functionally compatible with
          AT&T's C++ Cfront Version 2.1.

          The development group is taking rigorous measures to en-
          sure that no one in the group is exposed to the source code
          of the AT&T Cfront Version 2.1. Since it is important to
          the success of this project that no member of this group
          is exposed to this source code, please do not transmit any
          information, electronically or otherwise, to any member of
          the group as such a communication will jeopardize Digital's
          business and product goals.

          If you have any question about the advisability of a par-
          ticular communication, do not contact any member of the DEC
          C++ Compiler development group, but direct your questions
          to the product managers (Ngabuen Nshom and Gerry Therrien).
