Subject: Use of Laser and KBMS licenses


Hi Pat,

For both Laser and KBMS we have similar agreements.  Our consultants can have 
free use of the tool to learn it and determine if it is applicable for a 
customer engagement; we can build and show demos (they would love us to do 
this!); we can place it in the branch offices where applicable to demo the SW.  
The only (and obvious) request they made is that when we determine this is the 
appropriate tool and we are involved in a customer engagement that the customer 
purchase the tool.  Also for internal application development KBMS must be 
purchased (after we decide it is the right tool).  Laser has agrred to give us 
"X" number of internal licenses free for internal development to encourage the 
tools use.  We have not reached agreement on the size of "X" .

I'll have the Laser SW sent to your attention.  Do you have a copy of KBMS?

	Hi Folks, As you are aware, DIGITAL has a CSH agreement with Bell Atlantic for LASER - and we expect to have a copy of the kit (VMS/ULTRIX/MS-DOS) for evaluation for one customer project. As you are all aware, a CSH agreement can only work in Europe if Bell Atlantic have European distributors. They have requested our help in identifying potential distributors - so if you have any suggestions please post them here. FYI I have attached a brief description extracted from the MARKETING literature. Thanks, Joe. LASER is a C based ES tool which integrates OO and Rule based features, it is structured in 3 sub-systems :- KR kernel. - C pointer functions, Multiple inheritance, - multi-valued properties, properties with multi data types, - message passing to methods with/out parameters, - multiple methods and/or demons per property, - demon firing controlled by user:state & type, - user defined local relations, worlds supporting scenarios, - facets for user controlled data access, - database access via demons/methods. Integrated rule system - Forward/backward chaining, pattern matching, rule groups, - hypothesis-evidence networks, global rules with priorities, - user defined rule selection strategy, - rules can cal external functions with/out parameters, - no maximun on rule conditions/actions elements. - explanation facility. Simulation - integrated with rule system, graphical interface, - discrete event based, user defineable simulation blocks, - reports generation. Cost : USA only costs are of the order of 4k$ for VSs and 10k$ for 8800's, not including state and federal taxes - I would guess that European country prices will be established between Bell Atlantic and the distributors. Platforms : VAX VMS/ULTRIX, SUN, MacIntosh IBM MVS, VM, RT, PS/2, RS6000 Pyramid, Silicon graphics Workstations.

	I have been asking Pat (Roach) this question, and he has obtained a promise from Pat McHugh (I think it was Tues/Weds of this week) to arrange for us to receive a kit (VMS, ULTRIX ) as soon as possible. I will post a note as soon as it arrives. Joe.

	LASER is here, well, sort of! There is a parcel at custom's in the Nice Airport from Bell Atlantic addressed to me. There was no invoice within the parcel and they will not release it until one arrives. A FAX will shortly solve that problem and we should have the kit in the very near future.
