255.0. "Looking for E/XCON (Empty Xcon)" by KETJE::VANDEVYVER (Luc Van de Vyver 856-7577) Fri Nov 23 1990 16:47

We have a request from a Belgian customer for a 'configuration system'.

The actual question is 'can we buy XCON and/or XSEL'.

I know we discussed this during the last AI-CC-FORUM.
Someone (who?) told a success story about it.

If I remember well, not XCON was sold,
but a project to develop another config.system.

Are there any parts of this new system which can be re-used?
If not the software, maybe the expertise?

Any comments welcome,

thanks
Luc

Luc,

The thing you're probably looking for is DICE (Domain Independent
Configurer Expert).

Luc,

Dirk Bade also talked about XQUOTE a config system for DEC software, which he
has managed to sell, (along with consultancy to change the domain knowledge), to a
customer in Germany. Ask him about it!

255.3any pointers to DICE?KETJE::VANDEVYVERLuc Van de Vyver 856-7577Mon Nov 26 1990 14:518
Thanks Hans and George,

I'll ask Dirk about his XQUOTE-project,

does anyone has a pointer to DICE info?

Thanks,
Luc
255.4DICE: Further InformationYIPPEE::JONESTue Nov 27 1990 08:3013
    Luc, I suggest you contact Mick YIPPEE::YURCHAK; he did some work on
    trying to apply DICE to a simple configuration problem, and has
    produced an evaluation report.

    I would be pleased to discuss further if you believe there may be some
    potential in making a customer project out of this; we have some ideas
    on configuring, and some tools which could be a good basis for
    starting-off potential projects. Let me know if you think there is
    some potential.

    Cheers
    Steve

    The main developer of DICE is Jay Shaughnessy in the U.S.; he's
    at JAMMIN::SHAUGHNESSY.

Thanks for you information,

I'm digging deeper in the subject,
roll the DICE to define the QUOTE ...

I'll post possible results here...

255.7Xquote/Xenter short descriptionGYPSC::BADEFri Dec 07 1990 14:0619
    Just for completeness:

    Xquote/Xenter is reusable software based on VAX OPS5. It helps sales
    representatives to configure Digital's SW-products with respect to
    prerequisites (HW+SW) and options. Inputs are an existing customer
    SW-configuration (or zero) plus possible customer wishes (to be
    selected from a structured wishlist). Outputs are lists of SW-products
    with recommendations for their application.

    The user interface is done in VAX FMS (but in german language), so
    Xquote runs on every VAX. The SW is reusable in the sense that it might
    work unchanged with another set of wishes and products, as long as that
    set fits into Xquote's product and wish tables.

    Dirk,

    I just read about an ASSETTS product that sounds similar. Is this one
    in ASSETTS?
