Expert Systems in Canada
How Digital's Customers Benefit from Expert System Technology
Many of Digital Equipment of Canada's customers are using expert
systems to achieve new levels of productivity, safety and com-
petitiveness. Listed below is a selection of Digital's Canadian
customers who are taking advantage of this technology.
AGT
AGT (Alberta Government Telephone) contracted Digital to offer
the Business Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence Program on-
site at AGT's corporate headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta. This
intensive six month program, which began in September, 1989,
involved training in artificial intelligence techniques combined
with an apprenticeship phase, during which the participants de-
veloped expert systems for AGT's business operations under the
guidance of Digital knowledge engineers. When the program suc-
cessfully completed, AGT had trained seven knowledge engineers
and had seven expert system application prototypes which are
currently being implemented as production systems.
Canada Centre for Remote Sensing
The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing has developed seven expert
system components for the LANDSAT Digital Image Analysis System
(LDIAS), a set of programs for image segmentation of digital
images. The expert system components guide inexperienced users
through the difficult task of image segmentation. The system
is implemented on Digital VAXstations, and the expert system
components were written in RESHELL, an expert system shell
developed by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans / CompEngServ Ltd.
CompEngServ Ltd., an Ottawa-based advanced computer technol-
ogy consulting firm, has developed an application that performs
intelligent quality control checks on oceanographic data on tem-
perature and salinity. The system, called TSAC-QC (Temperature
and Salinity Quality Control), was developed under contract from
the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and verifies the format
of data, determines whether the location in space and time of
the data is sensible, and checks the data values against ab-
solute and relative measures of correctness. The system then
assists the operator in repairing suspect data. This system
was developed and delivered on Digital VAXstations in the C++
programming language, and features a knowledge base, display
manager and a set of data manipulation tools for technicians to
quickly develop new quality control tests.
Dofasco
Dofasco has produced a prototype expert system to help manage
the coordination and scheduling of rail cars that transport pig
iron from the blast furnace, through some intermediate treatment
facilities, to the melt shops where the iron is used to produce
steel. The application was developed on a Digital VAXstation
by a participant in Digital's AI Fellowship Program, and was
written in Fortran, VAX OPS5 and Nexpert Object, a Digital
Distributed Software product.
Environment Canada Atmospheric Environment Service
Environment Canada has developed an expert system for assisting
in the forecasting of severe convective weather, such as thun-
derstorms and tornadoes. The system, called KASSPr (Knowledge
Assisted Severe Storm Predictor), was tested in an intercom-
parison of AI systems used to predict severe weather called
"Shootout '89" in Boulder, Colorado. KASSPr was developed on a
Digital VAXstation in VAX OPS5 by a participant from Environment
Canada in Digital's AI Fellowship Program.
2
Husky Injection Molding Systems
Husky Injection Molding Systems has developed the Mold Designers
Assistant, a prototype expert system for mechanical design of
injection molds. This system is intended to reduce the engi-
neering backlog by automating some of the CAD/CAM engineering
tasks for mold designers. The system was developed on a Digital
VAXstation in Nexpert Object, Fortran and McDonnell Douglas Uni-
graphics II by a participant in Digital's AI Fellowship Program.
Hydro-Quebec
Hydro-Quebec has developed an expert system to help manage one
of the world's largest electrical distribution systems. The ex-
pert system, called LANGAGE, assists operators in nine regional
control centres in identifying the origins and consequences of
alarms and disturbances, allowing them to understand the problem
and make decisions more quickly and accurately. The system was
developed on a VAXstation in the VAX OPS5 expert system devel-
opment tool by a participant from Hydro-Quebec in Digital's AI
Fellowship Program.
LANGAGE is one of many expert system applications being de-
veloped by Hydro-Quebec to help them manage their business.
Hydro-Quebec maintains a Task Force on Expert Systems, and the
Task Force recently engaged Peter Sass, a Senior Technology
Transfer Consultant at Digital's AI Technology Centre, to review
Hydro-Quebec's work to date in this area, and propose future
organizational and operating scenarios for future expert system
activities at Hydro-Quebec.

Ivaco
Ivaco has developed an expert system for scheduling billets for
production in a two strand, hot-rolled Rod Mill. This process
is best performed by a single individual, but the workload is
too much for one individual. The expert system takes automates
routine tasks and low-level strategies so the scheduler can
concentrate on higher level strategies. The system was developed
on a Digital MicroVAX in VAX OPS5, Fortran and Cognos Powerhouse
by a participant in Digital's AI Fellowship Program.
London Life
London Life has developed a knowledge based application for fi-
nancial underwriting of life insurance. Financial underwriting
is the analysis of the motivation behind the purchase of insur-
ance and the willingness and ability to continue to pay renewal
premiums. The application was developed on a VAXstation in KBMS
from AICorp, a Digital CSH, by a participant in Digital's AI
Fellowship Program.
McMaster University Medical Center
McMaster University Medical Center developed a prototype expert
system designed to assist with the assessment and care of pa-
tients with medical disorders who are about to undergo surgery.
The system, called PREOP (Preoperative assessment), assesses
cardiac risk factors, determines the probability of the patient
developing postoperative complications and recommends when to
stop and start various medications. The system was developed
on a VAXstation in Nexpert Object, a Digital Distributed Soft-
ware product, and was aided in part by a grant from the Digital
Equipment of Canada External Research Program.

MPR Teltech Ltd. / B.C. Tel
MPR Teltech, a research and development subsidiary of B.C. Tel,
developed an expert system to help managers of the long distance
telephone network increase the number of completed calls. The
system, called NORA (Network Overload Reroute Advisor), assists
network managers in the early identification of opportunities to
divert traffic from overloaded routes along alternate paths that
have idle capacity. NORA runs at B.C. Tel on a Digital VAX under
the VMS operating system, and was developed in a combination of
conventional programming languages and Nexpert Object, a Digital
Distributed Software product.
MPR Teltech Ltd. / B.C. Tel
MPR Teltech, a research and development subsidiary of B.C.
Tel, developed an expert system for the Switch Network Analysis
Centre (SNAC) of B.C. Tel to track down problems that prevent
long distance calls from being billed. The system, called SAILOR
(SNAC Analysis to Inhibit Loss Of Revenue), analyzes large
quantities of data reflecting unbilled calls and searches for
patterns that could indicate failures in trunks, hardware in
analog offices, PBXs or deliberate fraud. The system runs at
B.C. Tel on a Digital VAX under the VMS operating system, and
was developed using a combination of conventional programming
languages and expert system tools.
National Research Council of Canada
The Institute for Information Technology at the National Re-
search Council of Canada has developed two industrial scheduling
expert systems. One is a production scheduling system imple-
mented at a paper-mill felt making plant, and the other is a
manpower scheduling system for coal terminal operations. These
applications were implemented on Digital VAXstations in VAX
OPS5, an expert system development tool from Digital.
5
Stelco Technical Services Limited
Stelco developed an expert system to assist with the setup of a
five stand cold reduction mill at Stelco's Hilton Works steel
making facility. Proper setup is a key factor in reducing the
need to adjust the mill while it is running in order to achieve
good product, and this adjustment can cause further troubles if
the strip breaks or cobbles. The system was developed on a VAXs-
tation in Nexpert Object, a Digital Distributed Software prod-
uct, by a participant in Digital's AI Fellowship program. The
system was delivered on a personal computer in the C programming
language.
Transport Canada Development Centre / CompEngServ Ltd.
CompEngServ Ltd., an Ottawa-based advanced computer technology
consulting firm, has developed an advisory system for air traf-
fic control confict resolution under contract from the Transport
Canada Development Centre. The system, called CORES 2 (Conflict
Resolution Expert System) provides air traffic simulation, con-
flict prediction and advice on conflict resolution, presented to
an air traffic controller through a graphical user interface.
The system was developed on Digital DECstation 3100s and 2100s
under the Ultrix operating system, using the G2 expert system
development tool from Gensym, Inc., a Digital CSH.
