DIGITAL DELIVERS ENHANCED Rdb/VMS INTEROPERABILITY, DATABASE
               CONVERSION SERVICES AND OBJECT-ORIENTED PRODUCTS

Information Network is Digital's Strategic Database Direction

MAYNARD, Mass. -- November 5, 1990 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced new products and services that extend and enhance
the functionality of Rdb/VMS -- its strategic relational database on
VMS. Included in the announcement were products that enhance Rdb/VMS
interoperability with other vendors' databases using Network
Application Support (NAS), services for migration to Rdb/VMS, and an
object-oriented database and object-oriented application development
system. At the same time, Digital also announced its strategic
database direction for the 1990s called the "Information Network".

"Digital delivers the most innovative, comprehensive and highest
quality set of application environment software in the world, and is
the only vendor with the resources and services to deliver software
solutions that can integrate our customers multivendor computing
environments", said David Stone, Vice President of Software
    products.

"Partnering with customers and third-party software vendors enables
Digital to offer integrated solutions on an enterprise-wide basis so
our customers will prosper," Stone added.

                  Digital Extends Rdb/VMS Interoperability
                  =======================================

Digital announced two new DEC RdbAccess products that enhance Rdb/VMS
    interoperability with non-Rdb data.

o DEC RdbAccess for Oracle on VMS provides an Rdb/VMS SQL gateway,
enabling direct read access to Oracle databases. Rdb/VMS
applications can transparently access an Oracle database using
standard VAX SQL commands. Available in November, 1990, RdbAccess
for Oracle is priced from $1130 to $47,100, depending on customer
    configuration.

o DEC RdbAccess for VAX RMS provides an Rdb/VMS SQL gateway,
enabling direct read access to RMS and VSAM data. RdbAccess for RMS
will be available in March, 1991 with pricing from at $900 to
    $37,860, depending on customer configuration.

The RdbAccess family of products offers a standard Rdb/VMS interface
to IBM's DB2, VSAM, RMS files, and ORACLE databases, allowing
data to be accessed from a single application or consolidated into
a single data warehouse. This family of products allows coexistence
between many data environments, protecting customers' investments by
making it easier to integrate new applications using Rdb.

In addition, with VAX Data Distributor, version 2.2, also announced
today, Digital users now can automatically transfer and consolidate
data from Oracle, DB2, VSAM, Rdb/VMS and RMS databases to Rdb/VMS
databases to create a data warehouse. VAX Data Distributor will be
available in November, 1990, with prices ranging from $930 to $59,761.

Database and Application Migration-Conversion to Rdb
             ====================================================

Digital also announced Rdb Migration services to assist customers in
moving their databases and applications to Rdb/VMS databases.

The initial offering of the Rdb Migration program will provide a
comprehensive set of services enabling customers to convert from
Oracle to Rdb databases. These services are delivered by Digital on
a complete turnkey basis and include data conversions, applications
and tools training, and database optimization.

The program will be offered through Digital's Center for Migration
Services in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to customers worldwide.
Although the first implementation of the program will offer
conversion services from Oracle to Rdb databases, Digital plans to
announce conversion services for Rdb from other database products.

"Many customers are interested in taking advantage of the production
quality features available with Rdb. VAX users are attracted to Rdb
because of high availability through support of VAXcluster systems and
the fault tolerant VAX systems, referential integrity, two-phase commit
for distributed transactions, and the most complete set of performance
tuning features and design tools are attracting VAX users to Rdb. Two
other motivations in many conversions are Rdb's integration with Digital's
CDD/Repository, network services, ALL-IN-1, TP monitors and layered
software products; and the superior price/performance Rdb delivers",
said Chuck Rozwat, Manager of Database Systems Marketing and Product
    Management.

                Object-Oriented Products for Complex Applications
                =================================================

Digital is at the forefront of object-oriented technology, which is
revolutionizing the computer programming and software world.
Object-oriented refers to the way software developers think about
and organize software. With object-oriented programming, programs
are written using reusable segments of code as though they were
standard parts -- rather than tediously writing code line-by-line.
The result has been a significant reduction in the time it takes to
write, modify, and maintain software applications.

As part of its Object-Oriented thrust, Digital announced the DEC
Trellis Object System -- a sophisticated object-oriented system for
application development. Trellis features a pure object-oriented language,
tools and compiler support for object-oriented programming of large,
complex applications. These types of applications tend to be difficult
to model using existing software development tools.

Examples of complex applications where Trellis is well-suited
include those applications that require significant data modeling
or complicated analysis such as electronic assembly in CAD,
portfolio management in financial segments, and CASE tools such as
design analysis. Trellis has an SQL type library, giving users the
ability to build applications on relational databases such as Rdb.
DEC Trellis will be available in December, 1990 with pricing set at
    $5,000 per user/activity license.

Through a joint technology, marketing and reselling agreement with
Objectivity, Inc., Digital also announced Objectivity/DB, a
high-performance, object-oriented database management system that
combines database technology with object-oriented concepts.

Objectivity/DB's fully distributed architecture provides full and
transparent distribution of data and control to the user.
Objectivity/DB, a portable product developed for the open systems
market, will be available in January, 1991 for the VAX/VMS,
    VAX/ULTRIX and RISC/ULTRIX platforms. Objectivity/DB is well-suited
for electrical computer-aided design (ECAD), mechanical computer-aided
design (MCAD), certain applications in computer integrated manufacturing
(CIM), laboratory sciences, computer-aided software engineering, (CASE)
and computer-aided publishing (CAP). Objectivity/DB is priced at $3,000
to $25,000 and will be available in December, 1990.

               Digital's Information Network Strategy
               ======================================

Digital's database strategy and direction, which provides a software
framework for extending Network Application Support (NAS) data
access services, is called the "Information Network". The Information
Network strategy encompasses technologies that will allow users to
transparently integrate and manage data dispersed across a multivendor
distributed computing environment. It will allow integration of Digital
and non-Digital data managers, will be portable across platforms, and
will allow direct access to all forms of networked data.

"With the Information Network, Digital intends to provide complete,
transparent integration across two dimensions," said Hans Gyllstrom,
manager of Database Systems. "First, Digital will integrate a
variety of data representations, including alphanumeric, text,
graphics, and multimedia. Second, Digital will network information
across an enterprise of multivendor systems, integrating different
Digital and non-Digital data managers. The Information Network
strategy is unique in that it goes beyond conventional database
    technology on the market today."

"Digital will leverage its established strengths in networking and
database technology, and over the next several years, continue to
deliver products, tools, applications and services as part of the
    Information Network," Gyllstrom said.

Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
Massachusetts, is the leading worldwide supplier of networked
computer systems and services. Digital offers a full range of
computing solutions and systems integration for the entire
enterprise -- from the desktop to the data center.
