Epitool 4.1 NEWS
------------------------------------------------------
Delivery of Epitool 4.1 field test 1, was originally scheduled
for april 1, but has been delayed, the latest problem was that
we had not received the proper version of NetEd and therefore
the new graphic taxonomy browser did not work properly.
But now FT1 is on its way. We expect to test internally for
another week before distributing FT1.
FT1 will have the anticipated 4.1 functionality with the
following exceptions:
- the SQL interface is missing
- Running Epitool on an HP workstation as a DECWindows
server is not fully working.
FT2 will have the full 4.1 functionality.
Of course some minor corrections and enhancements may
be done during field and acceptance test, but there is
nothing besides what is described below that is planned
for 4.1.
------------------------------------------------------
New release schedule.
External field test 1 DE only
External field test 2
(Acceptance test) DE + EE June 1
Release DE + EE July 1

Overall description of Epitool 4.1
Epitool 4.1 uses VAXLisp 3.1, VMS 5.3 and DECWindows 2.0.
Syntax and semantics for execution and definition operations
has not been changed, so there should be few problems
converting from 4.0 to 4.1. There is only one small change,
which concerns application graphics, see below.
Most improvements have been done to the graphical interface.
4.1 is much more productive to work with since several useful
graphical tools have been added.
4.1 is also much nicer to demo.
There is a general sql interface to rdb. (not in FT1, but in
FT2).
The graphical interface is significantly faster because of
several small improvements.
Several annoying details such as problems with fixed and
usually too small windows popping up at places where the
individual user did not expect them to have been eliminated.
Thank you all people who have given us suggestions and advice on the
new version.

Detailed description of Epitool 4.1.
------------------------------------------------------
* Development Graphics
- New graphical taxonomy browser
Uses NetEd to display the taxonomy as a directed
acyclic graph. Navigation window, Often used commands
in a popup menu. Possiblity to expand/de-expand the
graph.
- New graphical attribute editor
- Inactivation of menu alternatives that aren't possible
to select, this is shown by shadowing the names.
- New individual browsers.
- File Selection widget used for loading modules. Multiple
file selection is possible.
- External Functions now as an Action Browser
- Current module
New more consistent handling of modules in different
browsers. Each browser has its own current module and
the 'global' current module is only used when a new
browser is opened. Current module for a browser can be
changed with pop-up menu. Titlebar in editors indicates
the module in which the editing is performed.
- Selection of local/visible in concept editor with radio
buttons
- Widgets retain their size and position when Dismissed
and reopened.
- Color and Geometry customizations
Different colors can be assigned to 13 classes of
windows. The colors, size and position of the
windows that are currently opened can be saved and this
information will be used next time Epitool is started.
- Editing operations
The editing operations that were available in text
editors are now available in all text fields, eg the
prompt window.
- ^X == Resume Graphics.
SET GRAPHICS ON must be used to start the graphical
interface the first time, then ^X can be used to resume
the graphics. Hence nothing drastic (= starting
graphics) will happen if ^X is typed by mistake.
* Rdb-integration (not until FT 2)
