Subject: Copyright Notice, Patches/Kits

Barbara, Don

The following message from the law department may also need to be applied to
Patches, support kits or one-of customer kits. The demand from the field for
instant fix-it kits may get us into trouble if we do not have the correct
copyright material embedded. Barbara Cary may be able to clarify.

	John

                    ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILEGED COMMUNICATION

I am a member of the Law Department in Maynard, supporting Software
Licensing Operations; John Gunther suggested I contact you with
regard to this issue.

In researching the company's practices concerning the copyright notices
embedded in the code of all software products we have learned there is
great inconsistancy in the actual text which appears. We have developed
language we would like to see standardized, and I am currently attempting
to publicize and otherwise notify as many of the software development
groups as possible so the language may be embedded in the code such that
it appears to the customer prior to execution of the product.

The text is as follows:

Copyright (c) Digital Equipment Corporation, 19
All Rights Reserved. Unpublished rights reserved
under the copyright laws of the United States.

The software contained on this media is proprietary
to and embodies the confidential technology of
  Digital Equipment Corporation. Possession, use,
duplication or dissemination of the software and
media is authorized only pursuant to a valid written
  license from Digital Equipment Corporation.

RESTRICTED RIGHTS LEGEND Use, duplication, or
disclosure by the U.S. Government is subject to
restrictions as set forth in Subparagraph (c)(1)(ii)
of DFARS 252.227-7013, or in FAR 52.227-19, as
  applicable.

         *  *  *  End of Text  *  *  *

I would appreciate it if you could pass this along to the individuals
responsible for the code so Digital's intellectual property rights in
its software may be as well protected as possible.

Thanks very much for your attention, and if you have any questions,
please give me a call at dtn 223-2862.

Regards,

Barbara Cary
