1. Purpose of this paper

DIGITAL is a truly "networked" company. So one of it's most valuable assets is
it's EASYNET, which connects all DEC employees who

- produce info and
- seek info.

So one might consider it to be huge, global marketplace. If you have the right
mindset it will be the source for a very large share of information you need.

But as this market is huge and complex one might get lost by trying to explore
it in a fashion that it supports one's individual information needs.

This little guide emerged from my effort to organize my information about "How
to find Info".

When I started to distribute it the whole thing was merely a heap of copy
locations without any explanatory text around it. So my manager did find it too
confusing, especially for "non-feaks" and "DIGITAL newcomers".

So I extended the paper by some explanatory texts to make it more user friendly.

This Guide's GOALS are

- to provide a short overview over the information material available in the net
and where to find it

- give some hints about who should use it (Sales, Marketing, EIS, Field Service)

- publish some info on publications available from external sources

The Guide's NONGOALS are

- to provide Guides to the use of the tools mentioned (like COPY, NOTES, FTSV
and VTX)

These are documented as part of the appropriate product documentation or can
be obtained from the network

The best thing is to ask a knowledgeable colleague for a hands on
  introduction.

(I would even suggest to add it as an item to DECintro).

- to guarantee the consistence and completeness of all information

as this paper is a "one man show". So I'm grateful for every information
correction and suggestion I receive from YOU

- to be delivered by other media than electronically.

To make the most out of this document pls feel free to distribute it to people
who could be interested in it.

Everybody who wants to subscribe send mail to KREMPEL at FRN to be added to the
distribution list

Especially welcome are all contributions / corrections

REMARK: New users pls read the chapter "How to use this paper" first.
It's placed at the end of the guide for technical reasons.

2. What's new in this issue

Sorry, that the new issue took so long but I'm currently very busy preparing
things for the HANNOVER fair.

Seeing the wealth of good presales material we have in the company one should
not forget that it's WORTHLESS for almost all non-english-speaking countries.

As long as the corporation does insist on MARCOM deliverables in FINAL FORMAT
based on the GENIGRAPHICS standard we will see hundreds of rare SWAS hours spent
in these countries every months for the "reinvention of the MARCOM wheel".

Whoever is in charge of MARCOM material, especially slides, should think
carefully whether he could do it a little bit less "glamorous" using a tool
like VAXSIGHT, DECwrite or RAGS (which can be used at almost very DIGITAL
office)

Some stuff would look a little bit less "glamorous" but it could be reused
by

	- nationalising it and
	- integrate it into bid papers

It would

	- save us some millon dollars and
        - foster the idea of the ONE message

I would like to thank all colleagues whot made this new issue possible with
their contributions.

A special thank's to the EIS journal team for the promotion of this guide in the
latest issue of the EISjournal.

7. On-Line Proposal InfoBase

The On-line Proposal InfoBase consists of

- product descriptions
- marketing literature
- SPDs,
- examples of proposals and
- other tools that may assist with proposal development.

The InfoBase is ALL-IN-1/WPS-PLUS-based and employs the shared library feature.
All documents are formatted for DECpage output; are easily transferred via MTS
mail, retaining all WPS-PLUS attributes; and are keyworded and cross referenced
into subfolders, simplifying the search and retrieval of documents.

1. SET HOST command -- From your user account, at the DCL prompt, type SET
HOST PROPOS.

2. Username>

Select the account name that corresponds to your area. (Example: If you reside
in the Northeast Area, select Northeast, etc.)

Account names are: NORTHEAST, NEWYORK, MIDATLANTIC, SOUTHERN, EASTCENTRAL,
CENTRAL, SOUTHCENTRAL, SOUTHWEST, WESTERN, EUROPE, GENERALINT.

Password> JUMPSTART

3. The system will prompt you for your name, badge #, and a security code
(numeric).

At the security code prompt, enter 0000. You will receive a notification of
authorization failure. The system will ask you if you wish to register and then
proceeds with a list of questions you must answer to complete the registration
process.

Within two working days, you will receive a personal security code. This code
confirms your registration and will be required for gaining access to the
account.

8. TIMA information system

VAXPAX will be closed down an be replaced by TIMA in February 1990

1. TIMA (Technical Information Management Architecture)

This tool stores and distributes information and other tools throughout a
European network of locations. There is currently at least one machine in every
European country and the US and GIA are also implementing.

TIMA consists of four major facilities:

   	STARS
   	TOOLBOX
   	MESSAGE
   	CHATTERBOX

Normal User registration gives access to all of the above.

2. What are these facilities for ?

STARS	A storage and retrieval system you probably know well by now.
This system offers a means to access information about known
problems and their solutions, via a set of product related
        databases.

TIMA STARS offers an automatic distribution system which
sends any new articles throughout the entire network, sending
them simultaneously to all the major countries. You are
offered an article submission system which then feeds the
article to the network via a central hub.

Your User STARS Profile can be used to define a default set
of databases to be opened whenever you call TIMA STARS.

TOOLBOX	A central location for the purpose of storing and using
various tools. The tools currently available range from
EDT-style reference information, to micro-code, some source
listings, executable images and DECwindows Bookreader format
        Digital Manuals.

Defining your User Keyword Profile, you can make TIMA send
you a notification mail if anything arrives which is related
to a subject in which you are interested.

The TOOLBOX is a new concept and is growing rapidly. As
separate databases appear, you will be able to define your
TOOLS Profile to identify which databases you would like to
open by default each time your call the TIMA TOOLBOX.

MESSAGE	This is a system of message distribution, split into two
        types:

NEWS:	To be sent to ALL persons at a given location.

GRAM: To be sent only to those persons who have
defined a KEYWORD in their User Profile which
                is related to the message.

The GRAM distribution system has directly replaced the FLASH
system on VAXPAX. If you wish to receive ALL the Time
Dependent messages, you can use the KEYWORD: BLITZ.
Otherwise, you can use a product related keyword (PC6XXX, VMS,
ULTRIX, ALL-IN-1, LN03, LPS40 etc.) and receive only those
   		which mention that product.

CHATTERBOX A central point for discussing issues for which you have not
found a solution in STARS or TOOLBOX. This discussion forum
is available throughout the TIMA network. Your query or
comment could be answered by any user from as far afield as
           Finland and Israel.

Many of you will ask "Why not just use VAX NOTES ?". The
difference is that TIMA users do not have far to search for
the Chatterbox. Nomatter what the product it relates, you
can make an entry in the ChatterBox.

Some TIMA users may be specialists who are not highly
specialised in a given subject and as such, are not likely to
know that a notesfile exists on a machine `somewhere' on the
           Digital Easynet.

The Chatterbox is also monitored and purged on a regular
basis. If no recent response has been shown to an article,
it will be returned to it's author (along with any old
responses) and deleted from the ChatterBox. In this way, it
will not become as unmanageable as some notefiles.

3. Where can I find TIMA ?

editor. They provide a whole lot of symbols which can be imported into newly
created slides.

Even if one planes to go for one of the new DECwindows painting tools there is a
way to use these symbols by converting them (There is a conversion tool set
available)

The Maintainer is

2. GENIGRAPHICS slides

Most of the slide shows available from corporate PHOTO library are produced with
a GENIGRAPHICS system.

In order to change (i.e. nationalize) these slides one migth order the
GENIGRAPHICS sources on diskette and change them.

If there is no GENIGRAPHICS system in the country one might contact GENEVA
MARCOM (Marketing Communication Department) to ask them to do it.

11. WPSplus - DOCUMENT-Conversion tool

I put this tool pointer in a special topic as it belongs to a group of
facilities which help to convert documentation between the world of the business
systems predominantly used by sales and the world of EIS which uses more
DOCUMENT as a facility to develop large documentations/proposals

The network location is

  CHPSC::SYS$PUBLIC:REFORMAT_V1-2.BCK

SUGGESTED USERS:	Sales

14. Engineering Systems Group (ESG) Speakers Bureau Service

The ESG Speakers Bureau brings Digital senior engineers and engineering managers
face-to-face with their peers from customer organizations. The bureau works by
matching a customer's problem, as described by Sales, with Digital's internal
engineering experts in that specific area.

During a sales visit to headquarters, a Digital engineer shares approaches and
solutions to problems similar to those faced by the customer. Engineers and
engineering managers registered with the bureau were selected because of their
expert knowledge and desire to work with Digital's customers through a program
that has limited impact upon their regular job responsibilities. It's a
combination of Digital and its customers' engineering strengths working
together.

Information on ESG's Speakers Bureau should called Charles Denny at DTN 297-7682
or send VAXmail to CURIE::DENNY.

7. Notes conference service

MAILbus Conference Update Service

Once a week, this Conference is scanned for update information and
then consolidated into a Update Mailshot. The information selected
consists of files detailing :

    1. Note Titles (only those new since the last Mailshot; every
three months a full directory for the previous 6 months is
	created)

    2. Keywords
	Presented as 2 Tables
		Keyword List
		Keyword Cross-Reference
Section A - Note #s associated with Keyword
Section B - Keywords associated with Note #
    3. Conference Membership
A Mail distribution list filtered to exclude certain
                membership categories (e.g. Conference	Moderators)
and extended to include specific interests (e.g. CSCs)
A comment field details the Member-name (not always the
same as the Conference authorisation details) and includes,
if known, details of Location and Function Code

These first two files are consolidated into the Mailshot and sent to the
Conference Membership as per the distribution list. The purpose of the
Mailshot is to assist keeping those who need to know up-to-date.

Copies of these file can be obtained at any time by sending VAXmail:

	To:	UKCSSE::MAILbus

with the following :

	Subj:	MAILbus Conference <document>

		where	<document> =	Directory
					Update
					Distribution
					Keywords
					Cross-References

You may receive the Mailshot on a weekly basis by being registered;
to do this, please send VAXmail:

	To:	UKCSSE::MAILbus
	Subj:	Conference Update Distribution

Details to be included for successful registration are:

		Full name

8. Getting internal PAKs

European Internal PAKS implementation is available now thru European VTX.

To access it from the European VTX menu,

o Select option 18, Information Services then
o Select option 15, Internal PAKs

or use the keyword ISPAK.

To access ISPAK directly do

       $ DEFINE VTX$SERVER ILOV02::"""185="""
$ VTX 0 (the 0 is important as there is no VTX basepage installed for
                the VTX server)

In case of problems encountered using the system, ESSB maintain a
hot-line on dtn 890-3339 and a mail account (ILO::ISPAK) for less
urgent comments or questions.

!!!!!!!!!! NEVER GIVE THESE KITS TO CUSTOMERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even for tests a customer sites you need a least a temporary customer PAK to be
abtained via the local field service organisation

11. Cost of network ownership

SUGGESTED USERs:	Sales
EIS (especially NAC's and Business consultants)

The "Cost of Network Ownership" is an important presales tool, which is under
permanent maintenance. It shows the superiority of our offerings in the light
the overall cost of running a DP environment

I still miss the locations on where to find online copies of the study.

What you will find here are the locations on where to find templates for
2020 spreadsheets to be used in calculating different customer specific
situations.

The most current spreadsheets are located in the directory:

         	BONNET::MARKETING_DISK:<SCHMIDT.COO_CONFIGS>

Filenames are long and difficult to type, but they describe the
comparisons contained in them.

The files are:

            6310_VS_9370-90_75_USERS_TECH_WL.W20;1
            6320_VS_4381-23_75_OFFICE_USERS.W20;1
            6330_VS_4381-24_200_USERS_TECH_WL.W20;1
            6360_VS_3090-180E_350_USERS_TECH_WL.W20;1
            MV2000_VS_AS400-B10_8_OFFICE_USERS.W20
            MV3300_VS_AS400-B20_12_OFFICE_USERS.W20
            MV3400_VS_AS400-B30_20_OFFICE_USERS.W20
            MV3800_VS_AS400-B40_35_OFFICE_USERS.W20
            MV3800_VS_AS400-B50_60_OFFICE_USERS.W20
            MV3900_VS_AS400-B60_90_OFFICE_USERS.W20

We also have a number of older spreadsheets available in another
directory. Additional cautions are in order about using all of these:
because these spreadsheets were not originally intended for
publication, some incorrect or apparently conflicting lables were left
at the top and at the bottom of a few spreadsheets. These are offered
strictly on an "as is" basis.

They are in the directory

    	BONNET::MARKETING_DISK:<SCHMIDT.COO_ARCHIVE>

Filenames are less descriptive than for the above listed systems. In

1. How to use this paper

EASYNET offers

- Electronic newspapers (usually via VAXmail)

For each publication you will find a VAXmail-address in this guide
where you should send mail to in order to be registered on a permanent
  distribution list

  It should look like this

	NAME : _____________________________
        Organisation : _____________________________
        Mailstop        : _____________________________ (node::userid)
        Location Code : ___
        Cost Center : ___
        Manager's Name : _____________________________

  SUGGESTED USER's : EIS and non-EIS people

- Notes Conferences

Notes Conferences are meant for corporate wide many-to-many discussions
available for almost every subject under the sun.

Most of the notes conferences are open i.e. you have the freedom to enter
them and participate. Some are closed i.e. you have to be admitted by a
  moderator.

See Item "Notes Conferences" regarding the location of a list of all
open notes conferences in the system

SUGGESTED USER's : depending on the interest

- VTX services

VTX is a corporate wide service for one-to-many communication concerning
a lot of business related info.

It contains a lot of information about

  - products
  - competition
  - internal organisation

It's organised in a tree structure.

One should browse not only through the national services but also
at least from time to time through the "Corporate VTX library"
which lists the complete offering in alphabetical order.

Quite often the VTX services offer SEARCH by KEYWORD.

VTX is usually accessible from ALL-IN-1 as well as from plain VMS.

SUGGESTED USER's : of interest for all users

                     especially recommended for

                     + Sales
                     + Marketing and
                     + Management

- Distribution via MAIL-Deamons

For some of the documentations there a MAIL-Deamons set up by the editors
These are programms which monitor incoming mail directed to a special
VAXmail address. They usually analyse the contents of the SUBJECT field
of the incoming mail and react 8usually by sending you the requested
  documentation via VAXmail)

For these info sources you will find

  + the VAXmail address and
+ the layout of the SUBJECT field

Please fill it in exactly as required

SUGGESTED USER's : These services are usually only of interest for EIS
                     people

- Consultancy Kits

Consultancy Kits are internal tools to be used for

  + presales and
  + postsales

acitivites related to structured software and planning services we sell
  to the customers.

  They contain

  + slides
  + sample promotional texts
+ Presales Guides (how do I sell a service, plan the delivery)
+ Cookbooks (hands on guides for EIS)
  + additional tools (sometimes)

Also the material is in English there is a trend to offer at least the
slides now in revisable format so that they can be translated into the
local languages. (That requires a VAXstation with VWS and VAXsight)

SUGGESTED USER's : of interest for all users

+ Sales (Slides and presales guide)
                     + Marketing and	(dito)
+ EIS (at least the cookbooks and tools
can be used, even for the day-to-day
			  		 business)

- Plain DECnet locations

Most of the more technical things like

  + software kits and
+ online versions of product manuals

can beobtained by just copying from the file-specification (DECnet location)
mentioned in this guide to a local disk

One should use the FTSV tool instead of the plain VMS COPY command in order
to provide automatic restart in case of a network link failure

SUGGESTED USER's : These services are usually only of interest for EIS
                     people
