I. DIGITAL'S INDEPENDENT SOFTWARE VENDOR PROGRAM
---------------------------------------------
Digital's ISV Program is responsible for broadening the
portfolio of applications running on Digital's VMS and
ULTRIX systems.
The ISV Program identifies and works with third-party software
developers who create applications for the Digital VMS and/or
ULTRIX platforms. Our goal is to work with vendors in a supportive
environment, one in which they receive the business and technological
opportunities they need to become and stay successful.
This gives all software developers, independent of size, a program
where they can secure systems and technical resources. To accomplish
this, the ISV Program provides the following common services to its
members:
Development Systems
For purchase or lease currently being offered at up to a
41% discount, through the DECdirect Desktop Catalogue.

East and West Coast Development Technology Centers
Open free-of-charge to assist Digital software developers
in their development activities. Equipment and technical
support are made available. (See Announcement attached)
ISVNet Network
Network based technical support, through electronic mail,
Videotex services, bulletin boards, and problem resolution
databases.
Free Training
Presently running two DECwindows and one CDA
(Compound Document Architecture) course at no charge to
Digital's ISV Program members.
Awarenss Programs
Corporate Advertising, sales awareness, DECdirect Catalogs,
tradeshow participation and local seminars are only a
few of the approaches currently underway to ensure a
software developer's success.
II. Program Highlights of The Month
-------------------------------
The ISVG ROAD SHOW - A Portable Porting Center
BACKGROUND
The Independent Software Vendor Group has been very successful
in filling the development centers in Marlboro, MA and
Mountainview, CA. All ISVs that have utilized the centers have
either successfully completed the development of their application
to Digital's workstation platforms or have made tremendous progress
towards finishing such a port.
As expected, the ISVs that have extensively utilized the porting
centers have been those that are geographically close to the two
centers. In trying to spread the benefits of the porting center to
those ISVs that would like to take advantage of the porting centers,
but couldn't find the time or justify the expense, the ISV Group
developed the concept of the "Portable Porting Center"
OBJECTIVE
The idea of the Portable Porting Center was further expanded to
encompass marketing ISVG as well as educating the software
developers on the advantages of working with Digital's hardware and
software products. Thus was the idea of the "ISVG ROAD SHOW" born.
The intention of the Road Show is to relate directly to the
application developers the:
. Digital's Advantages
. Digital's strategic and technical overview and direction
. Provide actual "hands-on" porting time on Digital's
workstations with Digital Software Engineers available
to help in the porting effort.
PROCESS
In late August work began with the Area Workstation Sales Managers to
build support for this concept. The Mid Atlantic region was very
receptive to the ISVG Road Show idea, and since a large number of
potential ISVs are based in this region, we selected this as our
pilot site.
In mid October invitations were mailed to all the software developers
in the Mid-Atlantic region. The invitations emphasized
that our "ON THE ROAD TOUR" was designed to help the independent
software developer executive, get better acquainted with both the
technological and business offerings of our program. (PHASE I).
The invitations went on to talk about PHASE II where ISVG would come
back to assist in a "5 day hands-on porting/development tour."
Over 500 hundered mailings were done and almost immediately the ISVs
began registering for the Road Show.
Phase I was held in the Landover A.C.T on November 15th. It was a
resounding success. Over 40 ISVs attended and several of these
brought along a second person with them.
Our initial plan was to conduct one Phase II session. However, due to
the overwhelming interest that ISV's showed in Phase II, we had to
split it into two segments. The first one was held December 4-8th.
We are planning to hold the second one during the month of
January.
By several measures the Road Show was a resounding success.

III. RISC APPLICATIONS SHIPPING TODAY !!

OVER 400 APPLICATIONS ARE NOW SHIPPING ON THE DS3100 !!!
This is a 60% expansion over last month. The aggressive
porting campaigns are certainly paying off. This has been
an excellent collaborative effort across the corporation, but
it's not enough. We must continue to aggressively expand our
application portfolio, particularly those applications that drive
high volume sales. By focusing on the software developers who have
expended the resources to port to our platform, we can realize
short-term revenue, as well as enhance the demand pull for Digital's
RISC platform.
Many of the applications recently ported move thousands of
workstations annually. Both field and marketing must continue
to seek creative ways to enhance our existing relationships
thereby expanding mindshare and marketshare. December marks
the beginning of "Sell DECsystems With Confidence!" -- a new
company-wide campaign designed to help you build sales in the
growing Open Systems market. (Reference Sales Update article
in the 12/11 issue by Stuart Freiman).

When CODEX, the world's leading supplier of communications
hardware and network management systems, indicated interest
in Digital's desktop systems as replacements for 250 Apollo
systems, Sales Rep Bob Mahoney knew the key requirements would
be price/performance, service and support.
The Apollo systems were part of a microprocessor development
embedded systems application. "CODEX was unhappy with Apollo,"
says Mahoney. "They felt Apollo hadn't kept pace with technology,
and believed their support and service to be inflexible. CODEX
already used VAX and VAXstation systems. If Digital was to be
successful in getting this new business, we had to position
ourselves as responsive, state-of-the-art, and leaders in technical
CASE applications."
According to Mahoney, presentations made by Product Marketing's
Engineering Systems Group, Base Product Marketing's Workstation
Group and Low End Systems' Characterization Group were pivotal.
"ESG, who owns the charter for embedded systems and technical CASE,
sent consultant George VanTreeck to meet with CODEX and identify
application programs that would best fit their needs," explains
Mahoney. "Bruce Hunter's non-disclosure presentation on the
DECstation 2100 helped convince them that the RISC platform was
what they needed. The topping was LES' performance benchmark data
on the number of systems that can be served in a CASE environment."
ESG recommended four third-party applications. Interleaf is a
Digital CMP, with the BOIS Group; Software Maintenance and
Development, a member of Digital's Independent Software Vendor (ISV)
Program, had completed the port of their product; Intermetrics,
another ISV Program member, also had completed their porting;
Applied Microsystems Corporation was not a member of any Digital
third-party program; plus, its product ran on Sun systems.
"Early in the sales cycle, Digital put two systems onsite, to
encourage 'hands on' of the ULTRIX and DECwindows software," he
continues. "Software support engineers were made available to
provide hands-on demos. The local pre-sales support team worked
to get CODEX engineers comfortable with DECwindows. And Digital
set out to recruit Applied Microsystems Corporation, and get their
product on the RISC DECstation system. ISV Program Marketing Manager
Mike Wells, then with ESG, was instrumental in using ESG's 'Call to
Arms' Program to ensure that Applied Microsystems got the technical
and business support they needed to successfully complete their port."
CODEX signed an order for up to 150 DECstation systems to be delivered
this fiscal year; 46 were delivered in Q1. "This sale represents a
team effort between Marketing and Sales,"says Mahoney. "As a team, we
sold Digital, price/performance, DECwindows software and the range of
international service and support. This last point is particularly
important because CODEX will have this project in Canada, Japan and
Belgium over the next 18 months."
"This is also a good sign of the value of the ISV Program," he
continues. "For the first time, Digital has a vehicle for going after
new ISVs, to bring them onto our platforms. The Program is flexible
and responsive -- when customers get the software they want and need,
on the hardware they want and need, everyone wins."
