SUBJ:  Object-Oriented Databases and DBS


It has come to our attention in the Object-Based Systems group that many 
people and organizations are very excited at the prospect of an OODB.  
So excited, in fact, that some organizations outside of Database Systems 
Group are talking to third party OODB suppliers. I just wanted to inform 
you that this is unnecessary.

Database Systems Group owns the Database strategy and products.  We are 
chartered with solving your database needs.   We have been visiting various 
vendors to bring in a third party OODB to provide us with a short term 
solution.  It is our intent to assist the third party in allowing their
solution to work well other Digital products and architectures.  We will 
provide Trellis and 3GL interfaces and an ATIS repository interface 
for the OODB as well.  This offering will be presented as a Digital 
solution.

It is still our intention to develop our own OODB so we may have more 
control of it's direction and applicability to the many needs we are 
seeing generated by your organizations.  We are working on the design 
of this Digital OODB solution for the long term.  Phase 0 is still open 
and we are still accepting product requirements.  You will, of course, 
be kept aware of our status over time.  Release timeframes have yet to 
be determined.

It will be very confusing if groups other than DBSG are talking to 
these OODB vendors.  Please funnel any questions and requirements to me 
so we can be sure that the relationship we strike up is the right one 
for you and for DEC on a global level.  We need to show a consolidated 
front to these third parties.
