127.1 | On-the-Spot Report | KORAL::TURNER | MALLET::TURNER or DTN 768-5411 | Fri Sep 01 1989 13:43 | 104 |
| I attended IJCAI; below is a quick summary of what I noticed:
DEC . LISP 3.0
Announcements: . OPS 3.0
. agreements with Excalibur, Epitex, IBI, AI Ware,
and Neuron Data
. Secure Services will include use of XSAFE
. other new services, mainly in the U.S.:
. Configuration Services
. Diagnostic Services
Most Prominent . Real-time AI products, e.g. Gensym
Exhibits: . Speech products
. Neural net products
. Excalibur (see note below)
Most Absent . APEX
Exhibits: . Applications
. ESE and KT at the IBM booth
. Any vendor running on Symbolics
Silliest . A 36-rule application which helps the user write
Exhibit: routine business letters.
Showdown: . A chess match between Deep Thought and Robert Byrne,
a grandmaster. Deep Thought won in 48 moves.
Personal . I talked with John McCarthy, the inventor of LISP.
Highlight: His latest project is a tool called "Elephant".
I'll *try* to explain it in person to whoever is
interested...
Good News The DECstation is catching on. A number of vendors
for DEC: were exhibiting on it, and a number of others are
planning conversions. Peter Brittain and I put to-
gether the following list based on what we saw. Note
that this is not an official list:
Vendor Product When on DECStation
==================================================================
Abtech Abductive Reasoning no plans
Tool
AI Techologies (??) 1 Month after DECStation Lisp
(VMS now, DECW soon)
BIM Prolog Prolog interested but not planned
(VMS & ULTRIX now)
Delphi Common Lisp end Sept
(Ultrix now)
Excalibur all products "imminent"
(neural-net
pattern-matching)
GBB Blackboard Tool Port in progress
(graphics need work)
Harlequin Common Lisp "very soon"
Ibuki Common Lisp now
Intellicorp KEE not planned
Lucid Common Lisp Beta test September 89

Quintus Quintus Prolog "near future"
Wisdom Systems ai tool 2 months after Lucid Lisp
(= q3-q4)
ZYX Prolog Prolog now
Excalibur: This company and its products are worth mentioning: they
produce pattern-recognition software which runs exclusively
on the VAX and is getting a lot of attention. DEC announced
an agreement with them (DDS? CMP? OEM?) at IJCAI.
The two products demoed were (1) text recognition, and
(2) visual shape recognition. The text software can
take text from any form (file, CD ROM) and 'memorize' it,
e.g. build a compact index of it. The index can sit on
a different node than the text itself. When the user
supplies a string, the software finds the best match using
the index, then finds the target string in the main file.
It works very quickly and requires no special hardware
(parallel memory boards, etc.).
The shape recognition software uses a similar indexing
scheme to 'memorize' various pictures, which it then
uses to recognize items. This is being used in a lumber
mill in Japan to classify 8,000 boards a day.
The vendor claims that the products are based on single-
layer perceptrons, a technology supposedly discredited
by Minsky & Papert twenty years ago!

127.2 | Epi-exposure? | HERON::ROACH | TANSTAAFL ! | Mon Sep 04 1989 10:20 | 8 |
| Mark,
Last week I was talking from someone from Epitech and they stated that
40% of the DEC leads generated were Epitool related. They received
little mention in your note. Are the Epitech people exagerating the
interest generated a little bit?

127.3 | Clarification | KORAL::TURNER | MALLET::TURNER or DTN 768-5411 | Mon Sep 04 1989 16:38 | 31 |
| You're right, Pat. Epitec was an important part of our marketing
effort, and it's my fault for leaving them out.
To be more complete, we announced agreements with several third
parties:
. Epitec: To sell Epitool.
. IBI: To sell "Level 5/VAX" software which gives easy
access to Focus, Rdb, RMS, and RS/1 files and
databases.
. AI Ware: To develop applications for customers who need
pattern recognition tools.
. Excalibur: A joint marketing effort aimed at the image, text,
and signal recognition marketplace.
. Neuron Data: DEC will step up support and training programs
based on NEXPERT Object.
(Descriptions above are from Digital Review and DEC/Excalibur
joint announcement.)
Further details on what these mean for Europe as we get them.
