Subject: G-KAPS Announcement

The G-KAPS software is now operational, and ready for user testing. As
expected, there are a few minor bugs to be fixed, and the final documentation
is not yet available. We plan to use the month of June on the following tasks:

	1. Fix bugs as they are found.

	2. Add the following enhancements (as time permits):

		1) Color maps
		2) Preference Groups
		3) Static Analysis
		4) Print model
		5) Programming examples

	3. Modify screen layouts to reflect users' experience.

	4. Proceed with documentation.

G-KAPS is installed on the SELECT cluster. However, to run G-KAPS on your
VAXstation, you must have the system manager modify the startup data for
your node to run the G-KAPS startup file when your satellite reboots.

The G-KAPS team will be updating the version of software running on SELECT::
as bugs are fixed.

At a later date a G-KAPS software kit will be available for use on other
machines.

Release Notes are in the file SELECT::Sys$Help:GKAPS010.RELEASE_NOTES.

The available documentation consists of a short paper, "Knowledge
Representation in G-KAPS" and a preliminary draft of the "G-KAPS User Manual".
Paper copies of this documentation are available from our writer, Marlene
Reinschmidt at DLB12-2/D9.

Feedback on all aspects of G-KAPS is encouraged. You may contact Steve Polit
or me about any G-KAPS matter. There also is a notesfile SELECT::GKAPS
for discussion of VAX G-KAPS.

G-KAPS is a spin-off of a Digital sponsored research effort at CMU
called MOLE. MOLE is a set of OPS5 rules that know how to reason about
heuristic classification problems, if the problem is represented
properly in working memory elements (WME's). MOLE has a precompiler
that let's you describe your problem domain in a structured language in
the form of Cause & Effect relationships. The pre-compiler generates a
representation of the problem in OPS WME's which the rules can reason
    over.

G-KAPS is an interface that let's you enter knowledge about
the problem domain graphically, so that concievably an expert can enter
his/her knowledge about a domain directly. Tool is geared (I think) to
    the diagnostic/decision support domain.

This is a thumbnail sketch of the project and I probobly have not
properly described it, but it is the general drift of the project.
Please read some of the introductory info pointed to in .0 for a better
    description.
