11.0. "Advanced LISP Course" by LARVAE::TURNER (Mark Turner) Fri Jul 08 1988 11:14
The AI Training Group in the U.S. is considering an Advanced LISP course,
as the message below describes.
If anyone feels that this course would be useful in their country, could
you please send mail (to SPYDER::TURNER) or post a reply to this NOTE?
I'll then collect any responses and send them to the U.S.
Regards,
Mark

Subj: Advanced Lisp Questionnaire
Because of budgeting constraints, we are in the process of reassesing the
proposed courses for the next fiscal year. We would like to ask you a few
questions regarding the Advanced Lisp course, which is scheduled to be offered
the week of November 14th, by David Touretzky, at DLB12.
We are attachinig the course description to this questionaire for your
information.
1) What is the value to you, or your group, in having ISTT provide a course
in Advanced Lisp?
2) Would you, or somebody in your group, attend the pilot course being offered
in November (by D. Touretzky)?
3) Is there a project in your group that would benefit from this particular
course. If so, please briefly describe the benefits.
Please reply no later than Monday, July 25th, to Janice Heller at EXPERT::Heller
Thank you very much for your time and valuable input.

Course Description
COURSE: ADVANCED LISP
DESCRIPTION: This course concentrates on the advanced features
Of the Common Lisp Language, many of which are not
adequately treated in existing textbooks. The topics
covered include lexical versus dynamic scoping,
closures, the type system, the package system, modules,
and compiler directives. Special emphasis is devoted
to understanding efficiency issues by studying various
Lisp imp[lementation techniques, e.g., deep vs. shallow
binding, immediate objects, and CDR coding. The
advantages and drawbacks to specialized tagged pointer
architectures will be discussed. The course does not
cover topics such as the PCL/CLOS object system or the
interface and the X window system, which are not yet
part of the Common Lisp Standard.
GOALS: The Advanced Lisp course enables the participants to:
o Become familiar with the state-of-the-art in advanced
Common Lisp programming techniques.
o Learn how to exploit knowledge of machine architecture
and compiler characteristics to obtain optimal program
performance in a given LISP implementation.
LENGTH/FORMAT: Five days, Lecture/Lab
PRESENTERS: Dr. David Touretzky, Research Scientist, Carniegie
Mellon University
PRE-REQUISITES: Participants should have an introductory Common Lisp
Course and have had experience coding in LISP.
