1. Desktop Laser Printer Maintanance training
A number of courses have been devised and scheduled to build up skills
to service Desktop Laser printers safely. ALL engineers who repair
laser printers must be suitably trained and qualified. This is a Health
and Safety requirement. Further details are given later in this
document, but in summary, the worst case is that a resource controller
or manager who dispatches an untrained engineer to work on a laser
printer and who (the engineer or Customer) as a result suffers eye
damage, then the dispatcher/manager could suffer criminally
prosecution. There are many other reasons, both for good business and
Customer satisfaction, that trained engineers be used.
These courses are as follows:
EY-R867E Introduction to Laser Printers
EY-R881E Laser Printers - KYOCERA Engine
EY-R882E Laser Printers - IBM 40X9 Engine
EY-R883E Laser Printers - TEC Engine
EY-R885E Laser Printers - Laserjets
EY-R886E Laser Printers - Canon Engine
The courses are short (1 to 3 days). The introduction course is a
prerequisite to all the others. The "engine specific" courses enable
the engineer to repair a range of printers based on the specific
engine. You simply choose the quantity of courses you need based on the
number of units in your geography. Please "waitlist" students via
Learning Services administration and courses will be scheduled
according to demand. Course descriptions are provided later in this
document.
To maintain Digital proprietary laser printers, the following two
courses are the starting point, followed by a model specific course.
- Laser Safety and Printer Concepts (EY-2423E-IV)
- Laser Printer Concepts (EY-2424E-IV)
Students must have an eye test prior to any laser printer training and
the certificate produced at the time of training. The detailed
procedure is attached.
2. Installation and Configuration of PC Products
This is course number EY-R887E and is one day in length.
The purpose of this course is to reduce the unnecessarily long fix
times (or repeat or support calls) which occur when application does
not work after a hardware repair.
It gives engineers some experience in the setup of the most common
applications, on particular, the setting up of printers'
configurations for the "Top 10" PC applications.
Please book / waitlist via Learning Services Admin.
3. MOTOROLA RISC and UNIX REL. 4 MIGRATION COURSE
This course is for engineers required to work on the Inland Revenue
Motorola systems. Course number is EY-R865E.
Please book / waitlist students via Learning Services Adminsitration.
A course description appears later in this document.
Digital Health and Safety Guidance on Laser Training
----------------------------------------------------
Author: PAUL HUBER (UK Environment, Health and Safety Advisor)
Subject: Safety Training Guidance note
E,H&S Guidance on Laser Safety Training
Sending an engineer to service a piece of laser equipment without being
trained on that equipment would be negligent.
>>> Should an accident occur and result in any court case Digital and/or
>>> the individual concerned (the manager who issued the order to do the
>>> work) could face a criminal charge.
Adequate training is seen by the HSE to be an essential part of any
safe system of work and in this instance it is particularly important
as an error due to ignorance could result in permanent blindness for
the engineer or a bystander (a customer's employee).
The legal department have been consulted on this issue and are in
agreement with the above.
In addition to the above it is company policy that all personnel are
properly trained before being allowed to work on laser products.
For further E,H&S advice contact Paul Huber @RYO (7830-3612, 0831
476501).
Revised November 1993
As well as the extremely important safety reasons there are also
technical and product performance issues, ie.:
- untrained engineers are more likely to damage the laser printer than
they are to fix it, because of the completely different type of
technology used; therefore the maintenance cost of these products
will be greater than necessary.
- untrained engineers do not know the preventive checks and parts
replacement that are an essential part of every service call on laser
printers to ensure maximum reliability.
- untrained engineers are not kept aware of current known problems.
- untrained engineers will not know the customers usage and maintenance
responsibilities, so untrained engineers will not perform Customer
Key Operator training at installation time or be able to reinforce it,
where necessary on service visits.
- untrained engineers will also typically induce customer dissatisfaction,
as they do not understand the application.
* This eye examination is carried out by an Opthalmologist who is required
to fill in a Digital Laser Eye Examination form # EN-01415-06. These
forms can be obtained from Learning Services.
Copies of the completed form should be: sent to UK Medical Records at DEC
Park, kept in the engineers personnel file, and taken by the engineer to
the Training course as evidence that the examination has been carried out.

3. AXP PC / Server Training
ABSTRACT
The following training is available for engineers who are required to
service AXP based PC systems. All of these courses are
self-paced.
The recommended basic maintanance course is course number EY-P006E and
covers the DECpc 2000. The pre-requisites are EY-9900E (SCSI
concepts) and EY-I113E (EISA Concepts).
Students may go on to the Jensen Architecture Seminar, course number
EY-L889E.
Training for the latest product in the series, known as the Sable or
DECpc 2100 will be available as a Computer Based Instruction
(CBI) in TIMA. If you need this course before the final version
is available in TIMA, you can get a pre-release copy from John
Kennedy @UCG. The course requires access to a PC.

6. Summary of Training & Eye Test Requirements for Laser Printers
Abstract
This is an update and correction to a past article. Thisis the
definitive laser safety statement.
Engineers must have attended official training on the laser
printer engine that they are working on.
Pre-requisites for this training are:
EY-2424E-IV Laser Printer Concepts (0.25 day)
EY-2423E-IV Laser Concepts and Safety (0.25 day)
For printers that contain a laser that is power Class 3B or
highe the engineer must have a laser eye examination prior to
working on them. This is to check the initial state of the
engineers retina.
Currently the only Digital printers that have lasers this
powerful are the LN01 and the LPS40.
The eye examination is done by an optician and he completes the
appropriate Digital form (EN-01415-06). Copies are then filed
with Digital Health and in the engineers personnel file. The
form can be obtained from the Learning Services admin. group
(current UK supervisor is Anita Matthews).

Learning Services have yet to produce a Brochure giving the scheduled
courses for Q1/Q2 FY95. Production of such Brochures requires
significant external expenditure and has been deferred for the time
being.
This newsletter contains the Q1 FY95 Schedule for Technical Training as
it would have appeared in a Brochure. Course description information
can be found in last year's (FY94) brochures, on VTX or by contacting
Learning Services directly.
Courses additional to this list will be announced in future
newsletters and the Q2 schedule published when it is finalised.
