Subject: VMS V5.4 Ships!
We're extremely pleased to announce the delivery of VMS V5.4! VMS
software will begin shipping on Monday, September 10, 1990, in
pre-release form for our new system offerings (VAX 9000, VAXft 3000,
VAX 6000 vectors). FRS with all other systems will take place on
October 5, 1990. This is the result of significant effort on the
part of many devoted teams across the corporation.
Along with support of new VAX systems, VMS V5.4 introduces support
for DECdtm, Digital's 2-phase commit transaction processing services
embedded in the operating system. Other key features include
initial support of Volume Shadowing Phase II (Host-based Volume
Shadowing) and expanded VAXcluster configurations (much-requested
multiple hub configurations, multiple CI adapters, and load sharing
capabilities).
Given our commitment to deliver the highest quality software, we are
continuing qualification on some areas of the system. We are
limiting the potential exposure of some software components by
offering them in configurations we have stressed significiantly. At
this time, Volume Shadowing Phase II has been fully qualified on
VAXft 3000 configurations, and this software is key to the fault
tolerant goals of that system. We will support Volume Shadowing
Phase II in standalone VAXft 3000 configurations with 5.4 FRS.
More complex configuration testing is under way with Volume
Shadowing. Upon completion of that testing, we will determine the
appropriate mechanism to announce support for expanded
configurations. Upon completion of testing, on or before Oct 1, if
testing hasn't revealed a need for updated software, we will utilize
traditional Sales Update/cover letter communication mechanisms to
broaden the configurations. Should software updates be required,
they will be distributed with VMS 5.4-1, currently scheduled to FRS
in mid December. Qualification is scheduled to be complete by Oct
1, and we will then evaluate the support on expanded configurations.
The scalar VAX 9000-210 and -410 systems are fully supported with
this release of VMS. Qualification is complete on a single VAX 9000
in a VAXcluster sytem with two Star Couplers. We are confident that
these configurations will offer our initial customers the power they
need. Expanded configurations and features will be added upon
further qualification by the VAX 9000 Program Team.

SUBJECT: Announcing Final VMS 5.4 SSB Kits
**** NOTE: Network kits are FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY!!!! ****
VMS has made available the SSB savesets for VMS V5.4. These
savesets are upgradeable from any V5.* or T5.4 system and are
also installable from standalone backup.
These kits are for DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY! They must not be
given to outside parties. We ask that you do not demo or even
let customers see this system running. We are depending on you
to keep these confidential.
If you encounter problems with the software itself, please log a
QAR in the V5 database on node TRIFID. Please use the
QAR_INTERNAL account; the password is QAR. Please do not enter
QARs or notify VMS Engineering with kit access problems or
questions, refer these to the site contact. All discussion of
the V5.4 kit should take place in the VAXWRK::VMSNOTES
conference.
Available from the distribution sites are files containing the
SSB versions of VMS V5.4, DECwindows, and appropriate
documentation.

A list of the savesets, along with a partial list of the
documentation is listed below. A complete list of all files is

We ask that help us avoid any unnecessary load on the Engineering
Network. Please copy from the node closest to you. If that node
is not immediately available, get in touch with the local contact
person, as listed below, to gain access. Please do not try to
copy from a site farther away. There is always a significant
amount of network traffic generated by VMS kit copying. We need
your help to keep that load to a minimum.

VAXCLUSTER CONSOLE SYSTEM - VERSION 1.4
PHASE 0 EXIT REVIEW
Wednesday, September 26, 1990, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Transistor Conference Room, MRO1-2/P6
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
--------------------
The VAXcluster Console System (VCS) is a system management tool that
centralizes console services into one location. VCS V1.3, which shipped in
June 1990, currently supports DECwindows and includes an event notification
system that will alert data center personnel of critical event messages
via DECtalk, VAXmail, a terminal broadcast, a notification window, or other
user-defined methods.
This next version of VCS will build on those capabilities to provide customers
with a more comprehensive console management and automated operations tool.

Saveset A also contains the signoff copy of the V5.4-1
Release Notes.
V5.4-1 is still on target for a November 19 SSB submission date.
Your efforts in giving this product as much exercise and review
as possible in the short time before V5.4-1 leaves for SSB, will
be appreciated.
Your input thus far since the 5.4-1 kit was announced for internal
field test, has resulted in more than substantial improvements in
the current SSB version of the product over the initial IFT/EFT version.
