PRINTHDA REPLACEMENT Chaps, Attached is a blitz from Graham Bennell concerning new issues on RA devices. Point 2. is the important one to us as it concerns a change in parts to be specified for a failing HDA, obviously this is only relevant to the Engineers who work nights. For ease of reference I have included a list of the required parts at the end of this message. Clive. Device Support Group. Ext: (DTN 7833) 3778 Loc'n: UVO Basingstoke DECnet: COMICS::BENNELL INFORMATION TIPS. I am going to start distributing information in a different way. What follows is a part formed package which I believe is news! Hope it helps. 1. RA82,s log LED 66 if the hybrid is revH3 and the drive is dismounted under vms. If the drive is in a LAVC it may be logged on another CPU. REV's before H dont seem to have the problem. A lot of Hybrid modules are being used and the repair centre believe there is nothing wrong with them! The fault tag says LED 66. RA82 hda's fail with 66 and usually have 24 and 39 as well. Offset and erasure are responsible for this. Unstable temperature seems to be involved with 66 as well. Conclusion. Error code 66 is sometimes the HYBRID, it can be HDA or environment or related to system mount/dismount commands. Watch out for it and the codes with which it co-exists. 2. HDA usage is high at the moment. It will be the case for some time. Fans are failing in RA81's causing earlier HDA death. Watch fans and Filters. To give a new HDA the best chance of survival bless it with a NEW BELT and TWO yes TWO new POWER SUPPLY FANS. The fans live for about 1.5 times the RA81 hda life so to fail to replace will impact the HDA you are fitting! I do know removing the power supply is not a liked job. I DO NOT CARE! Leaving off the bottom left nut on the supply side fan will help the next engineer to work from the front. (A good tip from an engineer by the name of Rooney) Watch the multi coloured cable is clear of the fan before pulling the supply out. Watch the fan leads on re-insertion. MAKE SURE BOTH FANS PUSH AIR OUT OF THE BACK OF THE DRIVE. For the future I have requested that HDA's are packed with fans and belts (1 for each chassis type) meanwhile PLEASE get what you require. 3. RUMOURS. There is considerable VERY high level activity at the moment around HDA usage and failure types. When your problem site happens let me know! The customer trouble statement will be something like "These RA's seem to have become more unreliable!" 4. Would anybody care for a T.R.F. 86.1 | HDA VALIDATION FROM 1-12-91 | KERNEL::ADAMS | An RD54 beats a platinum disc !! | Tue Nov 26 1991 14:14 | 35 |
From: KERNEL::HOUGH "Morning everyone 26-Nov-1991 1330" 26-NOV-1991 13:40:38.27 To: @POST:24HR CC: HOUGH Subj: HDA Validations OOH As from 1st December 1991 there will be a change to the HDA Validation Process. From that date only the following HDAs will require validation: RA70, RA71, RA72, RA90, RA92 This will reduce the amount of validations processed by the CSC by 80%. The projected call volume for the Standby period (midnight - 07:00 weekdays, 19:00 - 07:00 weekends) will be only 3-5 per month. As a result the HDA Standby rota will cease operation, also on 1st Dec. I have agreed with Andy Hopkins that the above periods will covered by the 24 hour Systems shift. I have placed a blue folder of HDA Validation sheets by the notice board displaying the shift rota. The numbers are SYxxx. I will collect the sheets periodically & enter then onto the HDA database. CCD have been told of this change, so you can expect a validation call from 1st Dec between the hours mentioned above. As I said earlier, it is only about 3-5 calls/month. If, however, you need more information, I will only be too pleased to give a seminar or talk to people individually to bring you up-to-date on RA7x & RA9x issues. Thanks & regards Richard Hough |
